Took the last ham bone and cut it in half, now I have two ham bones, one half I am using today to make a large pot of beans, the other half back in the freezer for later use.  Guess I am getting more into homesteading and learning how to make due and conserve on things.

My storage building is coming Tuesday so I get to started cleaning and organizing my pantry by moving things out of there that don’t belong.  Can’t wait to see what is behind boxes on a top shelf in the pantry, just don’t know about me getting up on a ladder.

Going to make buttermilk today for I have been out it for some time, while in the store getting a few things the other day we overheard a man tell a little boy with him he had to get buttermilk and the little boy ask “what’s buttermilk. the man replied, ” son, it’s milk with butter in it”, my daughter just started laughing saying how cute she though that was.

I have one little red tomato on one tomato plant and the eggplant and bell pepper on the plants are so small, don’t understand why they are so small.

I have so many bags of dried beans and peas that was given to us a month or so ago and one was split peas which I have never seen or tasted, so I looked online on how to prepare them.  I found a recipe for split pea soup that is made with ham.   I had a ham bone in the freezer I had saved from Easter and followed the recipe and made the soup,  it was really good.  Now I need to find recipes for using lintels which again never seen or tasted, maybe the lintels will be as good as the split peas.

Things are not so safe here anymore, people are stealing here and we live so far out that we can’t count on law enforcement to get here to help us, so we now have to keep protection in our bedroom.  I try to convince dh to put up a fence and get a guard dog, but he said no that it would be it is difficult to cut the grass with a fence., I’m thinking to heck with the darn grass, we need a fence and guard dog.

    Thanks

It has been cool here at night so we have been sleeping with the bedroom windows open instead of running the ac.

My goodness families go from trying to stay safe from the pandemic to riots, don’t even want to think “what next”.

DH finally got tired of the farm house having so much in it that we ordered a portable building for storage, but it will take weeks for them to build it and deliver it. The first thing I am doing when it gets here is organize my pantry and get things out of that don’t belong in a food pantry.

This month I am blessed to have enough food that I can skip buying groceries and use that money to restock paper products and other needed items.

The raised garden area is doing well despite having a large pecan limb come down on top of it due to high winds then small size hail and heavy rain beating some of the plants down.  That storm hit without any warning and it ripped the roof of the chicken house dh was building, but he got the tin back on and the chickens are safe.

Gotta go start laundry before rain moves in.  Stay safe you’ll.

DH got the new motor on the tiller and it is working great and my little garden area is tilled and ready for planting those vegetable seeds I found in the pantry.  Planted the potatoes in a split plastic barrel and in about seventy days I will find out if it gives potatoes planting them that way.

Need for dh to finish up the new chicken house and pen and get those baby chicks which now are big chicks moved in their new home so they can begin laying fresh eggs in about four or five months.

I found some vegetable seeds online from Walmart so I ordered them and would like to try and have a fall garden this year if I am a success with the Spring garden.

Started my list of food and supplies that I will begin to stock a little at a time each month hoping to be ready and prepared for what comes this Winter.

Is it the food grade diatomaceous earth that I use to dust the chicken pen and chickens?

Is there a natural products that can be used to treat mites on my chickens.  They are pecking each other and when they peck each other some of their feathers are pulled out leaving bare skin.

    Thanks

Soup and honey cheddar cornbread has become our favorite food lately mostly for that is what I have ingredients for in the pantry and the kids seem to like it.  I think ingredients for soup will be what I stock because it’s easier to find those ingredients and it cost less.

I found another ham in the freezer that I will be baking along with a chocolate cake for mother’s day since we are not going out despite Texas being open,  new cases are still being reported here each day and I just want to keep the babies and our kids safe.

    Thanks

I had some ground beef that was used to make tacos and had some left over, so today I took the left over taco meat and added tomato sauce, chili powder and a few extra things and made hot dog chili out of it and it taste really good.  Meat when I find it is limited to only a few packages, so I have to come up with ways to use what is left over.

Thursday they are giving away free produce in our town, so going to go and get some for the kids.  Local law enforcement here is growing large gardens to help feed the inmates and I hope they have extra and maybe sell or share with the community.

We got the tomatoes, egg plants and pepper plants in the raised garden bed, but dh has not got the new tiller motor on the tiller so he is borrowing a tractor to break up a garden for planting the seeds from the can I found in the pantry.

    Thanks

Went shopping yesterday and today trying to get enough food for the month and found things very limited and costing more than it did last month.  One manager at the grocery store told me she didn’t know if they would have meat much longer and didn’t know about the rest of staple food.  I did find hot dogs and a few boxes of mac & cheese, some meals may have to be beans & wieners and mac & cheese.

I put in an order for laundry detergent, dish liquid, bath soap and sugar,  but still no tp online or in the stores.   I read where this pandemic could last as long as two years, my goodness I pray not.

    Thanks

Are things ever going to be restocked again, I am so tired of needing things only to find it out of stock when ordering online and in the grocery store.

The school has been bringing the kids lunch on Tuesday and Friday and they put little bags of baby carrots in their lunch and the kids will not eat all them,  so today I added those carrots with some potatoes and made pot roast. Had a half bag of butterbeans and a roll of cream corn so made that also for supper and that was the last of those vegetables and made the last box of brownies.

Friday I am going out to Sam’s and a couple grocery stores to try and get some extra things that may not be available next month.  Don’t think life will go back to normal for us because we still think that virus will be around for a long time and have to get ready and prepared the best we can if or when a second round hits.

Hope and pray all is well with you’ll.

    Thanks

Another round of severe weather came Wednesday with tornadoes that took three lives and destroyed many homes,  then last evening a major hail storm hit. The noise on this tin roof was so loud I was afraid it was going to knock holes in it, thankfully about twenty minutes it was gone, no damage as far as we can tell.

I am going out today and get some battery powered lights because it’s tax free weekend here in Texas for upcoming hurricane season.

I got tired of trying to hand pull weeds out of my raised garden bed so I purchased this tool called Grandpa’s Weed Puller, so more hand pulling weeds and it works great.  My seeds have started to come up now was worried they were old and would not grow, but they are coming up and the only other vegetable seeds I could find was at the feed store and they want over twenty dollars a pound for seeds.

Today the new motor for the garden tiller comes in and that will help a lot in gardening by getting the tiller fixed.  Just have to take one day at a time and do the best I can do with everything that’s going on.

    Thanks

Such a funny story, thank you for posting it.

I am in need of canning help.  CDC says prepare for another wave of this virus to hit during flu season this year, so I have decided to start canning a little each week.  Daisy posted some canning recipes that I am going to do and was wondering if you’ll have some favorite meals you’ll put up in canning jars.

    Thanks

In the old barn we are making a floor for the chicken house out of pallets that was given to us by the ag barn at school and we will cover the pallets with plywood and hopefully will keep foxes and other animals from digging under and getting to the chickens.

Today I am taking the other two chicken breast and putting them in the crock pot with stuffing mix and cream of chicken soup and using ham left over from Easter to make beans with ham and using the last of the few bananas for banana pudding.  Oh my I feel like this is a great depression happening on my homestead.

    Thanks

After storms hit with high winds, heavy rains and tornadoes Easter morning we still had a blessed day because we were spared any damage only power outage that we used as an excuse to nap and rest most of the day.  The kids had their egg hunt then their meal before we gave them their chocolate candy to enjoy.  I want to keep things as normal as I can for I don’t know how things will be in the coming months.

I read where the UN is warning of food shortages coming in the next few weeks and urging people to start growing their own food,  there is already a food shortage here in our area. I know it is likely too late to start seeds, but I am doing it anyway praying they grow.

    Thanks
