Hi all, Hope you all had a good 4th. Got home Friday, just in time for the neighborhood fireworks (hee hee) Cats are glad we are back . Our garden looks okay, DH’s watering system seems to have worked very well. Told our cat sitter to take what ever salad greens she wanted as they were growing fast. Don’t know if she got any. Our pea blossoms are all gone. Think it’s due to the little doe that showed up couple of weeks ago. If sitter didn’t get any salad greens, think the doe had salad all week LOL. Tomatoes, carrots, green onions and peppers are good. Melon and squash look to be on track for harvest and my one lone onion looks like it took and is growing well. DH’s flowers made it through as well, butterflies, bees and humming birds are happy. DH has the mason bee box up and we’re hoping this year they will settle in it. Only had one bee use it last year, so hopefully he’ll tell his friends about it Didn’t have any problems traveling although not a lot of masks or social distancing was observed. Due to our health concerns we DID wear our masks and a LOT of hand sanitizer was used LOL. But all in all it was a pretty uneventful time, got to see the grands and have some fun with them, we didn’t do much as DIL1 is still recovering from her carpal tunnel surgery. Although DH and I will have a REAL problem IF we hear Set it Free again. It’s the little ones favorite song from the movie SING. Went to the store to get somethings today and it played a couple of times while I was there, AAAAHHH!, think I may have it memorized as I was singing along with the instrumental to the amusement of some of the shoppers there. Ran into an old co worker and he was telling me they are ALL working from home and the company told them to take the PC’s and anything they needed to work from home. He said the company told them, need a comfy chair ?, take the one from work, etc.. The assistants only come in once or twice a week just to get the mail and process things . Found out 3 of the 5 brokers in an office of 14 I worked with jumped ship and are now working with another brokerage. Glad I’m retired!! Don’t need the headache anymore.

Littlesister, prayers going out for you and DH. Very sorry to hear about him. I hope he recovers soon. Hope you can get to the farmers market soon.
corsaire, how big are the cans of Grabill? I do Keystone(24-28 oz) but they are a bit pricey when you add the shipping. My local grocery does the chicken and the beef but rarely has the pork in stock.
granny j, sorry to hear about the tomatoes and garden. I hope they weren’t too badly beat up.We’ve been doing okay got 6 of the seven raised beds in and they are coming up very well. ANYBODY want salad greens LOL
I don’t know if anyone has Costco cards but they (at least up here) are only allowing one package of tp and pp towels per shopper. So far we’re good and so is Son2. When they ask we get stuff for them if Son2 can’t get it at his store.
DH decided last week, we’re going to take a chance and travel down to son1’s this week end. We haven’t seen them and the grands(in person) for over a year now. DH is getting antsy, face time just isn’t enough for him, LOL. They were supposed to come up but since Oldest granddaughter has been accepted in a very good volleyball school, they are staying put.The coach was mighty impressed with her last summer when GRD1 went to one of her summer camps and when she found out GRD1 is going to live with Son1, she extended the invite to join the team. And DIL1 had both her hands done , carpal tunnel surgery last month. She got an infection in her right hand so they had to go in and fix it this month. SO no traveling for her.
DH has been fiddling with the in ground system(came with the house) and thinks he’s got it set to water just the garden beds so we don’t lose the veggies this year. The weatherman has been predicting 85-100 temps next week. So far it’s been working so we’ll see what’s left when we come back.
Has anyone heard of any trouble(besides the protests/riots) along the highways going South (GA)? I read an article about a trucker that got fired on along I think I-70 in Ohio but nothing else so far. One of Son1’s friends was posting about carjackings and shootings down in ATL but I haven’t seen anything on ANY news outlets (MSM or ALT News) so far about it. Stay safe friends and have a great 4th.

Corsaire, If you can try Facebook Marketplace. That’s where I found the dresser I got last month. I had a great birthday last week, Son2 and family took the chance and brought dinner(KFC) and a honking 3 layer chocolate cake, Ice cream for Grandma’s Birthday. The kids painted me pictures. Grdaughter2 did tulips and Grson2 painted me my very own Nintendo switch. They are both really good pictures. Son2 and DIL2 gave me an amazon gift card. So now It’s shopping time, LOL. Son1 and family did Face Time and they are discussing the possibility of heading here in late June. The grands REALLY REALLY want to see us and the other grandparents. So we’ll have to see how that works out. On another note , we have 7 raised beds/ boxes going with veggies . 2 kinds of tomatoes, green peppers, salad greens, carrots and peas. trying green onions, cantaloupes, a regular onion and acorn squash this year. DH had a couple of deck rail boxes for his flowers last year and he wanted 3 more, so we ordered 3 more to finish off the deck. We ordered them from Menard’s. Got here pretty fast considering but last Thursday, there was a package on the porch from them. DH brought it in and OH NO three more have shown up. We can’t use them and we didn’t pay for them so he’s tried to contact them but haven’t heard anything yet. We’ll have to wait a little bit longer to return them to the physical store as no one is taking returns until the 5th around here. Bottle returns are going to be horrendous.Last estimate was over $50,000 in returns waiting to hit the stores in Michigan from the people.I know I may have 15-20 dollars worth sitting here waiting to be returned.

Hey all. got 5 of the boxes planted. We have two more still to do. Hopefully it will stay nice this week end and we can get them done and planted but the weatherman is indicating intermittent showers for this week end. Guys came and sprayed the apple trees today, yeah. With the shut down they are a “little” bit behind and now we’re shut down until 6/12. Just glad they were able to get here when they could. Don’t know if this is exactly prep related but DH and I went and picked up a 4 drawer old fashioned dresser Thursday. Got so ticked the other day with the one I have, keeps falling apart and I can’t fix it anymore. Told DH I’m going for one like we have from his mother and the one from my dad, solid wood, dovetail joints, deep drawers. Made in America in the 30’s-40’s. Found one on FB that looked like his mothers. The gentleman is an antique dealer and is retiring I think he said next year so he’s been posting things on FB that he still has. He can’t open the store because of the shut down, so he’s been pulling pieces from the store and putting them in his pole barn. DH said as we were going to pick it up, this is the longest trip away from the house we’ve made since February LOL.So sick of the crap that passes for “well built”. Before the shut down, we’d been looking to replace 2 dressers but most of what we saw is press board glued together crap.Even at a couple of high end stores we’d gone to most of what we saw was crap with high prices. The gentleman told us that he still has the store and we would be welcome to see if there was anything else we might like when we can go places.Told DH we will be going as we need a couple more bookcases for all the books we’ve been acquiring.

Welcome Notta, You’ll find this group to be really helpful I’ve learned a lot.

Hey all. Good to see you’re doing ok Muffy. Yeah, I’m worried about the money as well. As for Gates , I think it’s strange he keeps pushing vaccines IF I what I’ve seen is true, that none of HIS kids are vaccinated but that could be something that people(antivaxers?) are saying.to denigrate/discredit him.
Crow bar, yes they had tracking for TB back in the day.How I know, I am allergic to what ever they use so I show positive every time. Freaked the nuns out when I was in fourth grade because my TB test blistered up, Dad had to come and get me from school. His sister was a registered nurse and also was allergic to the serum. It took awhile for me to get the all clear to go back to school but it was in May they did the testing so I got out of school earlier than my sibs TEE HEE. Mom and I had to go monthly to the county health and get our chests x-rayed for about a year. Still carry the scar on my arm from the test.
It’s not too bad here, MOST people are wearing masks and we stay 6ft apart. Some things still are scarce but shipments are coming in. Son2 and family are doing okay but granddaughter 2 is getting stir crazy. Grson2 is happy as a clam, he gets to stay home. DIL2 had a conference thing with her boss and the other teachers and she is worried she won’t be able to do her job with the things the boss is being told how it’s going to be come Sept. She teaches pre school and it’s is very hands on. Kids and teachers wearing masks, cutting the number of students in the room, No Contact even on the playground, No using the cafeteria, gym, or music room. No water bottles or back packs. It’s going to be really strange come this fall. Her boss is saying that things may not be that stringent in the fall if things get better here. Just hope so. DIL1 hand surgery went well. she has a soft cast on and they are doing well. Son1 FINALLY got ahold of the unemployment people, got everything straightened out so he got a check retro’d for the back pay. He’s being told that they should be back to work with strict precautions by July. Although with the spike that’s going on now down there it may be pushed back. My friend(salon owner) sent me a message, she’s shut down till END of May now. So I’ll have to wait a little longer for my haircut. NO will NOT let DH do it, LOL. Dug my headbands, barrettes and my curlers out so it’s not too bad.Now I have to “remember” how to do it HA HA HA.
Went to Costco today for Son2. OH NO they are OUT of microwave popcorn. My grands are disappointed but I was told it’s on it’s way from my friend there. Will have to go out next week, he suggested I call first to save me a trip. Can’t order it on line as I believe they are sending the stock to the stores. Amazon is getting much slower now so my gaskets for my “sucky machine” won’t be here till next week or the week after. I can seal the bags but with out that gasket it won’t suck the air out of the bag. Have some bags that I can use with a Ziploc hand held vacuum, but I’m running out. Will be looking on line to see if I can get more. Target used to have the bags but last year decided to clearance out the Zip Locks that went with the hand held, got as many as I could then but haven’t seen them in the stores lately.Have been taking classes on line for container/ Raised bed gardening. DH order two nice boxes, price was better than we could build them. Can’t wait to get out “in the dirt” and get things going. I hope Old Mt Woman is doing alright as well. Stay safe and be well.

Thank you, Talked to DIL1 today. Nothing yet on her tests but her hand surgery is tomorrow (Monday) . Got moved from last week due to emergency surgery for someone else. Bumped her but she’s okay with that.

YES keep us posted . I LOVE Sauerkraut but I’m the only one who eats it here. So I’ve been getting the tiny cans of it for me.
I went to my “fresh” store this AM as they had whole beef tenderloin on sale $9.99 lb. DH and I thought we could cut the loin in half, vac seal it and put it in the Freezer for Christmas. Got there at 6:45 am, store Sr hour is 7-8 . Saw two people coming out of the store at 10 to 7 with loaded carts, so I went in. Went to butcher area and NO more Tenderloins. They only got 4 whole tenderloin packages in and the couple I saw had snarked all four because they double teamed the store. The store has limit only two types of meat(2 beef, 2 pork, 2 chicken) PER PERSON. So he took two and she took two .Manager couldn’t do anything about it right then but I know he’ll be changing that limit sign tonight. He did tell me they expect to have a few more on Friday. So IF I can I’ll be there when the store opens to get a whole tenderloin and cut it up, vac pac the chunks and get it in the freezer. I host Christmas for the family and depending on whether or not my niece and fam show up this year, I can have 14 to 22 people around the table. We do the meat and potatoes(and gravy). and everyone brings a dish to pass.

Crow bar, Sorry the recipe I was looking for you is gone. that was one of the books that went in the basement flood. But I have a rice recipe that was dinner for us years ago when Pop lost his job.
Make enough rice per instructions for the people you are feeding.Usually mom would make enough to fill the largest Pyrex mixing bowl. Then she would add 2-3 cans of chicken gumbo soup to the cooked rice and what ever chicken (or any meat she had in the fridge) that was left from a previous meal. Sprinkle some bread crumbs on top. Bake it in the oven for approximately 20 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Dinner was served. If you want use a little soy sauce when it’s dished up on your plate. That was dinner for the 7 of us a couple times a week. Of course you can play around with using other soups and seasonings but it seemed to fill us kids up.

Crowbar, thanks that is not the one I was thinking of. If I can find mine will get out here for you.A lot of my cookbooks were lost when the basement flooded.Been trying to replace the ones I lost over the last few years.

crowbar what is the Japanese recipe. If it’s one I’m thinking about, I’ve been successful using regular sweet potatoes or yams in it.

Don’t know about that crowbar, she played it incessantly every day. Good thing she loves Gaga and Grandpa as we got to play other music.
Has anyone had a problem with coinage disappearing at stores? Our local marts had signs up: Exact change or use plastic due to coin shortage. I know I was on a mini vacation and out of it but what happened last week to cause that?We left and all was well.

Fran, Thank you for the update. Son is north of Atlanta. I don’t think we should have too much trouble then. I think we do take 285 to his house and stay off of 75.
Little sister, corsaire, Thanks for the tip on Pleasant Hills. Will look into them. I went with the Keystone because (unless they changed it ) cans kept in cool, dry area are guaranteed on their nutritional value for 5 years. After that they don’t guarantee it.
I know how hard it is to control sodium levels. MIL taught me a lot because FIL couldn’t have any salt. So I haven’t cooked with salt in over 40 years and almost no store bought canned goods. Boys were raised on fresh or frozen and they continue that today teaching the grands how to cook from scratch.
