XL dog is part of my early warning and protection…..be it 4 or 2 legged predators.  Then I back up the dog.  Well, that’s the plan, anyway.  Kinda got off the script that one time, as I mentioned.  But it turned out fine, thankfully.

Should have heard the tremendously LOUD type of bark my dog did ..talking with the Mt Kitty one night from inside the house.  You can feel it in your chest like a deep drum.  Not her usual bark.  Just a single deeeep emphatic ‘BARK!’.  We went out to [2nd floor] porch and they kept up that ‘BARK‘  –  ‘RRA AWRR‘ for a while.  First and only time I’ve heard a cat here.  Never have seen one…but doesn’t mean they haven’t seen me.  I let a horse turn back and go home once.  Trusted the horse knew something I didn’t.  He was about to come outta his horseshoes.  And the bears don’t freak them out much.  He had that creepy feeling ….even if I didn’t.  I always pay attention when our ‘prey’ animals are On Alert.

Had someone knock on my door late at nite…..came all the way up our long driveway…up the exterior stairs and across porch with out any ‘HELLLO THE HOUSE’ or anything.  Creepy….against the Rural Rules!  I’d heard our porch gate close and latch….so I’m telling my friend, who was on the phone, my address quickly.  She lives across the country and if she has to dial 911 for me, she needs WHERE I am!  Then he knocked.

Had different dog…was medium size but barked large.  Let her bark, tho I could hardly hear the guy.  I’d already grabbed back-up and was not in front of the door.  Said he had car trouble …and it was a killer-cold night.  Offered to call sheriffs dept for him and he said he’d appreciate it.  Kept calling me ‘Ma’am’…and we don’t ma’am much out here in the West.  Well I did call for him.  Either he was trouble or he was in trouble.  The deputy called me later and said he really DID have car trouble, tho I couldn’t see any car on the road.

TURNS OUT…years later his wife saw me pull out of our driveway and follow her to church for women’s meeting.  HER HUSBAND was the guy with car trouble.  Well WHY DIDN’T HE SAY HIS NAME?  I asked if I knew him.  I’d have had him inside and thawing out at the fire…cuz he’d walked a very long way in that bitter cold.  🙁     Well, they still think I saved his life that nite.  Did.  Coulda done more but …people, follow the Rural Rules!  Don’t sneak up on a house ….ever.  Holler out early and loud.  Reveal your intentions!  Not that we’ll trust what you say but better than politely sneaking up on a person!  Scared me half t’ death that night!  But I think dog and I scared him more…poor guy.
