I think you are right when you say we always form communities, but I think the important thing to consider is that humans have always been tribal in nature. I highly suggest reading Warriors and Worriers. It isn’t about prepping but rather about gender differences seen consistently throughout cultures.
One of the points the author makes is the argument that men build coalitions and community for the purposes of defense and women remain primarily focused on the survival of their own offspring. That is a pretty shoddy summary so read the book before judging it for my poor characterization.
I do think that a lot of preppers/survivalists tend to take a more negative view of humanity that necessary at times, but I don’t think we can expect people to pull together and lay down their lives for strangers. I think if we want a functioning community we have to build it before the SHTF. If that’s where your heart is and that’s what you’re working on I think that’s fantastic.
