California would still have the same number of electoral votes. The census won’t be tallied until after the election, so no change in the power structure. Two ways it would go, either people in the coastal cities would be distracted and not vote (wishful thinking), or they would come up with “easy” ways to vote that would insure a much higher Dem vote than normal.
As for Nevada being beachfront, the plate is too big, it would not drop into ocean. That doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be damage, I worked and lived in the SFV during the Northridge quake back in ’94, gas mains were ruptured, the streets were on fire, it was a mess.
Worst case scenario for people on West coast would be big one in LA itself or off the coast. Tsunami hitting everything along western seaboard from Alaska to Panama. Even a big tidal wave won’t come inland more than a mile or two, so only LAX and Long Beach airports, along with Long Beach and San Pedro docks would be out. Assuming 5 and 15 and 10 stay open, trucks could still bring in supplies, and Burbank, Ontario and John Wayne would likely remain open to bring in supplies. It would be bad for people living within a mile or two of coast, like Fukushima, but it would be survivable for people inland, just a pain to deal with.
As long as a disaster is contained in a region of the country, our country is rich enough and powerful enough to rebuild that region and continue on. The situation changes if it goes beyond a region, like if Yellowstone caldera or Mammoth caldera blew. Or, EMP or CME wiped out electricity nationwide, that would be catastrophic for the US. According to “The Knowledge – How to Rebuild Our World from Scratch” the ‘best’ possible disaster would kill most of the people immediately, like a plague. That way there will be enough food and resources left for the survivors to live on until they can get crops in the ground. If everyone lives thru apocalypse, then everyone consumes all the resources, and it becomes much harder to survive.
I know people like to joke that a disaster killing millions in a place like California would be a good thing, but keep in mind, only about 50% of people vote, and of those, only about 60% in California vote Democrat, that means you are wishing that 70% of the people die who are not Democrats. And if you think people who disagree with your politics should die, you are no better than the communists/socialists, that is their take on life.
