Most folks in the U.S. have a severely myopic view of their place in the world. I don’t think that will change until it’s too late.
I remember sitting in the chow hall my first time in the ME. CNN, and only CNN, was blaring as usual. At that time CNN was covering the ME basically 24/7. I remember letting it fade to white noise as I often did when in that mild fog after eating. When I snapped back to reality and focused back on CNN, my initial thought would be…’Whoa where is that they’re reporting on, we’re winning somewhere, how come that’s so different from here, that’s f’d up’. Only to realize they were talking about here, right where I was sitting.
What was actually going on and what came through CNN were worlds apart. It was surreal to me.
