Dont know where you are getting your information from, but most of our troops got engaged at about the 500m line. PKMs and RPGs were the main effort from elevated positions, and they found their target just fine (APCs). AKs in the harassment/support role. They would attack from elevated positions at the 500m line as they knew the limitation of our 5.56NATO round. Our M2 (aka Maw Duce .50 cal) and the MG240 got the most effective use. Anything 5.56NATO, and you just were wasting ammo.
