Grid operators in control rooms are important. But in the US we have contend with tornado, hurricanes, forest fires, etc. When lines go down you have to have work crews of linemen to physically fix things. You also have to have transformers and many miles of cable and many poles. If a major hurricane were to hit the US now, it could take many months to get the power restored.
