Hi all – just joining here. A few days ago, I did an exercise that my daughter, who has cancer, suggested I do. The goal of the exercise is to discover what you are really passionate about.

1. Divide a piece of paper in two lengthwise. At the top of one side write “One billion dollars, healthy life to 100, always ensured success”, and on the other side, “Only 18 months to live with same health, same finances”
2. On each side, under the different headings, write down what you would make sure you did under each set of circumstances.
3. Now compare the 2 lists, and find the similarities.

I went ahead and did this and, lo and behold, it became a real priority organizer, which seems to me is the essence of prepping.

Although you are supposed to really look at the similarities, I found out that my 18-month list was a real wake up call, both for my personal priorities and what I needed to do in order to prep – things like making a will, making sure my family would have enough to live on if I died (I am the main breadwinner right now), setting up systems that would take care of them if hard times like food shortages, etc., struck. It gave me some concrete things to do. The only thing that wasn’t on my short-term list that I will be trying to do is to learn as much about medicinal and food plants as possible each day, especially in the context of foraging and learning about the common “weeds” that grow around me already.

So today, I am going to organize that list into concrete actions to be done in the months ahead. I also have both fibromyalgia and polymyalgia, so my preps are going to have to be realistic for someone in my condition.

I am really looking forward to this forum!
