December 16: Went to church and enjoyed the fruits of preparing food yesterday. Did get up really early and researched some of the details of the ketogenic diet and cancer, in particular how to help someone actually GAIN weight while on a ketogenic diet (answer: even more calories than you would think). This is not going to be easy. She’s 5’8″ and only 106 pounds. Looks like a model, but it’s not healthy.
@Amy Dixon: Thank you for the bivy sack idea!
@namelus: Yes, the heater is indoor rated. I do need more gas cylinder, however. We had to use it for a few days last winter and it really burns it up fast.
@Old Goat: I really love your bucket organization! We have all our buckets under beds right now – found cheap but sturdy metal frames with a 16-inch clearance underneath, so the usual 5-gallon bucket fits perfectly. All the beds in the house have storage under them, but it’s not all buckets. I think I’m going to organize it like you have it now, with color-coding.
@padded cell homestead Farmer: love your security system. There’s one you can do inside the house with cheap cell phones, too, but I’ve got to look into that again. It uses a free app developed by Snowden. I think it sends any images or recordings to your main cell phone if anything happens while you’re gone.
@corsaire: I make a great bean or lentil salad – one pound of dried beans soaked and cooked, then all the chopped or grated veggies (fresh or rehydrated) that you can manage (grated carrots, chopped tomatoes, various chopped herbs like dill, cilantro, parsley, niblet corn, olives, celery – anything you like). You should have about half beans (any kind) and half veggies. Then mix 2 parts olive oil and 1 part apple cider vinegar. Pour about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of the dressing over your bean-veggie mixture and salt to taste. Very simple, and tasty. Red lentils don’t make a very good salad, though, because they get all mushy. Best to cook them with any spices you like and serve over rice.
@Lilac5 farm: Great way to handle the credit card. Going to try it now.
