Hi everyone. Welllllll, is it possible that I purchased a FAKE or INFERIOR magnesium block? Yes I tried again tonite. I make a good little pile [as was in the vid clip] of magnesium bits. Takes a lot of effort…does not shave but kind of breaks off tiny bits. I put those in a tiny cast iron frying pan [about 2″ diameter] and was kneeling over the brick hearth besides. Not the kind of weather to try this practice outside yet. Again I sent lots and LOTS of showers of sparks from the ferro rod side of the magnesium block. I’ve actually done enough strokes to improve my aim at where that shower of sparks will land. {sigh}
I did have little fizzzles here and there. A bit of magnesium would begin but goes out in the next instant. Some strikes I could get 3 fizzzles at a time. Only once I was able to grab the bit of paper towel and edge it up to the red coal…..but it went out. THAT was as close as I got to success tonite. I couldn’t even get the magnesium to light with the cig lighter. That flame probably isn’t high enough temperature.
So…..did I purchase a magnesium block that has other elements besides pure magnesium? Is our VERY high altitude making any difference like it does getting charcoal to stay lit? [the element in that is less oxygen in our air….and/or…. less air pressure] OR….did storage in HOT/COLD truck for a few years change something in the magnesium??? I’m grasping for straws here….. 🙁
Took dead 9V out of a small PALlite and requested DH bring home a fresh one ..or two. That was also in the BOB. Haven’t even investigated all in the BOB yet, but getting there.
Manage to clear out the second laundry basket [that also hasn’t been holding laundry] of misc. things. Found a place for them. Clutter clearing….seems like it fills in right behind me…argh!
ALSO had a frantic search during/after PM chores tonite. Somehow dropped a bag off my shoulder – somewhere. I was checking the roadside where dog and I took a walk, but it was now dark. So drove with spotlight out the driver’s window. Checked other areas. Twice! THREE TIMES! WHERE have I been in this past hour??? Ah…down to check garage AGAIN and there it was. Hanging off a box in a corner where I’d put some things. Did NOT feel it come off my arm. It was a trial run for that bag to carry needed stuff while I’m feeding right before dark. Obviously, it’s NOT going to work for me. Need a hip pack that attaches to me! So far haven’t found a small one yet among my stuff. I do have quite a collection of bags, packs, and such.
