I use oatmeal soaked in milk to extend meat in my loaf.  But same concept.  I throw in vegetables sometimes….onions of course.  Shredded carrots.  Mushrooms.  What ever I have.  Shredded potatoes ….or I top the meat loaf with mashed potatoes when its going into the oven.  Golden mushroom soup poured undiluted on top.  But that’s ‘fancy’ for WW1 era.
