I have two of the .22’s that kept both sides of the family fed during the Great Depression.
One, an old Savage bolt gun will still stack the bullets.
The Winchester pump in .22 short, was literally used so much that the bolt set back from wear. One of these days I will finish the rebuild.
For “survival” I want a decent centerfire rifle, but in long guns, the .22 rifle comes next. For many years, I substituted either a .32-20 or .25-20 for the .22. Just enough extra oomph to make it worth the effort of reloading.
Even in those years I will admit to leaving a CZ .22 Magnum in the truck for emergencies, regardless of what else was around.
