Yesterday, December 30th, I spent some time talking with a friend of mine who has been making herbal remedies for many years. She told me about one she recently made for her ill husband using hibiscus flowers and hawthorne. We also discussed the merits of dandelion flowers and dandelion root, and she told me about a good commercially-made dandelion product her husband takes on a daily basis. It’s available at the great natural foods store I mentioned in an earlier post – so I think I’ll get some the next time I go there.
This morning, December 31st (the last day for this month’s challenge – it seems as though it’s gone by very fast!), I was watching a really good YouTube video, by Jason Kingsley OBE, about the construction of Medieval shields on his “Modern History TV” YouTube channel, and was interested to learn that the shields were held together by “Cheese Glue”. I did a little checking online and found a recipe from about 1300 for making glue from bits of cheese soaked in water for 2+ days, which are then ground up and mixed with an almost equal amount of quicklime. The glue is to be used while still damp. Once it dries, reportedly, it won’t be dissolved by either ‘fire or water ‘. Here’s the webpage where I saw the recipe, in case anyone else wants to read it: askthepast.blogspot.com/2014/03/how-to-make-cheese-glue-c-1300.html It might be good to know how to make DIY wood glue that really works, just in case.
Wishing you all a very safe and Happy New Year!
