This is one of my goals this year! So this challenge is perfect.
Toilet paper is easy. Just use reusable cloth and wash them. Is it what we’re used to? Of course not. But it does work in a pinch!
I can’t wait to see a variety of non-food things listed! And condiment recipes!
I’m also interested in the WWII rations group! I’ve thought about it a lot recently – how do I cook various things without oils and such that I can’t easily grow and make/render. I am learning how to cook with the lard I’ve rendered and the “leftover bacon grease” and of course, butter. But it’s not always just right for different recipes. In that same vein, I’ve been thinking about sweeteners as well… so attempting to tap a variety of trees on our property and grow sorghum, plus we have honeybees. So any thoughts, directions, alternatives, recipes, etc, are greatly welcomed. I use stevia that I grow in my herbal teas and licorice root when I can get my hands on it (Haven’t managed to grow it yet.) But those are not very conducive to baking.
So far this morning: I have taken a handful of “medicine” for pneumonia (I’m at the tail end of this blasted sickness). They are herbal remedies and vitamin c. However, I’m on one pharmaceutical medicine for vascular microspasms in which I’m searching for an herbal alternative…. also because the medication is known for reducing life expectancy so it’s not something I want to stay on long-term. So there’s that (which I know is also not a “real” part of the challenge but it is reality if something should happen if I couldn’t access those medications).
We have animals & hunt so our freezer is stocked from them. So we had deer sausage, eggs, and homemade bread. I’ve just recently started making all of our own loaf bread as it is the only bread my father can stomach. My goal this year is to learn to make each bread we use so that we don’t 1) have to buy it & 2) eat the preservatives that are found in most store bought items. I am drinking herbal teas – which is also a goal this year plus to cut down on coffee (even though I drink decaf because of my heart). I’d like to get to where I don’t drink coffee at all unless I am able to start growing a little bit to have during special times.
I’m really excited about this and I apologize ahead of time for getting long-winded!
