{groan} OldMtWoman is gonna sit in the back of the class and participate here and there. We already use almost all ‘homemade’ cleaners, laundry soap, body products… I make some of them and a dear friend sends me the rest….like a fantastic shampoo that works in my problem hair. It was about the 6th recipe she attempted that was a major hit! \0/
We hardly ever used “processed” foods except occasional cans of soup, until these past few years. DH made our breads/bakery products. Lots of cookies. I had dairy goats for a while and made lots of yogurt, some cheese, etc. I rarely drink milk now.
More recently, health problems with ourselves and our elderlies have put us into survival mode for energy. DH actually ate frozen sausage/egg breakfast muffins when I was gone for weeks with our elderlies. He stopped buying them when I came home…cuz I make them the usual way. I actually got sick finishing the last of the box of them. PLUS the dog barfed on two occasions from eating ONE BITE from DH’s processed breakfast muffin. Uh….something we’re not used to….shouldn’t GET used to….
We now have old poultry and haven’t renewed our flock. Still use their eggs in summer but the ladies are not laying enough to store in waterglass for the whole winter. As with the processed breakfast muffins, we’re noticing the difference now that we have store-bought instead of free-range poultry eggs. {sigh…someday when we’re resettled, we’ll have poultry full time again}
Since I am rarely able to shop and DH hates it,, we buy in bulk. And we reuse a lot of things. Buying at the thrift stores is also a form of reusing…and saving TONS of money for perfectly good clothing and goods.
Sooooo we’ll see how much we can afford the time/energy to participate. This morning we ate eggs/bacon. But I used a pancake mix to save energy. Dang that stuff tastes bad! Blech! Would be fine but it has some version of “blueberries” in it. I like my own pancakes better:
Buttermilk pancakes 1/4th c buttermilk powder or 1 c if using liquid real stuff. 1 c. flour [and I use all sorts of grain combinations like buckwheat [Vit C], ground oats, whatever. But the bulk of it should be wheat [white or fresh ground] to rise well. Wheat has gluten to hold the rising. 1 tsp baking powder. 1/2 tsp baking soda. 1/4 tsp salt. 1 egg. 1/2 c water and 1/2 c milk — omit if you’re using real buttermilk. 2 Tbs oil.
Mix dry ingredients well. I use sifter. Whisk wet ingredients til frothy. Gently add dry to wet and combine til just mixed. Cook on cast iron griddle for best results. Preheat til drops of water splattered on iron skitter in balls across surface. Turn down heat VERY slightly if cast iron gets hotter as you make the pancakes. [yes, you can use if you want, Daisy]
We sometimes add chopped nuts/fruit/coconut. The best is dark purple currants that actually grow wild up here in this barren, harsh land. They’re wonderful!
Today’s DIY was an Altoids tin oil lamp…told about in Daily Prep thread before coming here.
OldMtWoman …Internet didn’t crash on us yet? yay! Hope tech fixes this thing!
