My goal with this challenge is to create habits that we can build on each day. So some of the things that I recommend may seem kind of boring and like they’re not really helpful. However, it’s much easier to make small habit changes and stick with it than it is to overhaul your whole entire life all at once.
I’m planning to alternate fitness and nutrition challenges every other day.
Today’s challenge is about water.
We don’t always pay enough attention to how much water we’re drinking. Some of us drink gallons of other stuff – coffee, soda pop, juice, etc.
I’m not here to tell you to stop drinking the other stuff you drink. Today’s challenge is merely about drinking water.
If you drink other beverages, make yourself a little rule.
Drink one glass of water before each one.
- So before you have that morning coffee? Drink a glass of water. Warm, cold, room temperature – however you like it.
- If you’re going to have a soda pop, a Red Bull, or a coffee for an afternoon pick-me-up? Drink a glass of water first.
- Before you have that wine with dinner? Have a glass of water.
This is a really small change that can have some very real benefits.
- First, you may find you drink less non-nutritive beverages without even trying to slow down.
- It can promote weight loss by making you feel fuller and enhancing your metabolism.
- Water can prevent headaches, improve digestion, and reduce bloating.
- Water can help decrease joint pain by keeping your joints lubricated and preventing gout attacks.
- Water can improve your physical performance. The effects of dehydration can be noticeable when you lose as little as 2% of your water content. “This can lead to altered body temperature control, reduced motivation, increased fatigue and make exercise feel much more difficult, both physically and mentally.”
So today, I’m not asking you to break any negative habits or suddenly try to chug a gallon of water a day. Just add a glass before you drink other things. And keep up this habit throughout the month.
If you don’t like plain water, try adding some sliced fruit to infuse it with flavor.
How much water do you normally drink?
I drink a fair bit of water because I don’t often drink other beverages. I generally start the day with a 2-liter bottle on the table beside me and refill it once during the day.
What about you? How much water do you drink? Will this challenge be easy or difficult for you?

I drink water in the morning-about 24 oz. When I ride my bike or walk I take another 24-48 oz. with me. I love the suggestion of drinking water before I drink anything else. This one will be easy to incorporate daily.

Depends on tasking that day min is 2 L of water up to 6L+ when doing extreme hot and heavy work. Though we add things like our own electrolyte drink made from salt vitamins, honey, tea and peppermint extract. Sometimes flavoured with orange or lemon. Birch syrup works too as it has a flavor component kinda like spearmint /smokey but it’s unique to birch syrup.
We build this place on cups of tea… lol have a bit of it stashed away. Nothing better than full tippy first flush tea with bergamot oil….. though in winter comming in and smelling the fresh chai and knowing the creamyness of full raw milk.for adults at night some spiced rum too into chai

During the winter, I never seem to drink enough water. Keeping hydrated helps me with that winter dry skin, too.
For the month, I am going to try to drink a glass of water before any other beverage.
I have a life long, on and off again, love affair with diet soda. I have used the water technique to quit the habit, so I am going to hopefully quit the soda habit. I am currently at 1-2 diet sodas a day.

I drink almost exclusively our wonderful well water. Straight up….no additives.
I don’t drink the water when in town…at our elderlies or out to eat. Cuz the small town has the most wretched-tasting water! YUK. So I drink ice tea or 7-up. I drink 7-up or it’s cousins at home only if I have digestive issues. And a few times per winter I have hot cocoa before bed!
However, I live at very high altitude in the alpine desert of the Rockies out West. So we are all kinda perpetually dehydrated. I have water bottles all over the house. You can get a pinprick in your throat suddenly…including the middle of the night. Cough your head off without a quick drink. I’m always within reach of water. I usually drink a fourth to a half a water bottle thru the night.
So I carry water everywhere…in town. To the barnyard. Used to carry plenty on horse rides, of course! Do I drink enough? I can’t really tell cuz I’m drinking out of so many different water bottles. Not sure someone can ever drink enough/too much out here in this arid region.
