I’m in NH and Maine… fixing a boat as a home that can be a home that’s relocatable on a whim.
Have found a winter have on a safe Caribbean island of Montserrat.
I’m looking for others to share information and maybe do joint projects.

Welcome, Fred. A boat would be a great bug out vehicle. You have an interesting and original plan!

What kind of boat do you have? How many feet?

I looked into it seriously back in the early 2000s. Even got my ASA Bareboat cert.
But fiberglass hulls have a lot of up keep that may or may not be around SHTF.
Seems to be an aluminum hull would be the way to go.

So, I opted to buy a farm instead.

    Boat… pirates.
    Solo farm… gangs.

See the pattern? Group defeats solo.

Find a place that can become a small, defensible community surrounded by farmland/rangeland. Settle in. Become an asset to the community. STFU and wait for it.

@Mouse Wizard, I got lucky and my community and neighbors make up for a pretty good group.
Got a few friends to round that out.

Montserrat has an active volcano. Already has totally destroyed Montserrat’s largest city.

While travel agencies romanticize the Caribbean, the fact is that those people down there do not like us much. They just like our money. Since they depend on tourism, and for almost all their supplies to come from somewhere else, in a SHTF event they would likely be worse off than we here in CONUS. Pirate activity has also picked up a lot, especially in the western Caribbean.

Don’t mean to be a party pooper, but there is a lot of negatives regarding escaping difficult times on a boat. I feel sure you have considered all that.

Thanks for the welcome … pirates…pirates… fear fear… plan for it and hope you never have to put the plan into action… we have rigged for pirates going through the Malacca straits many times…used to run Borneo and Sumatra to Japan. For the most part don’t be an easy target you never have a problem.
Montserrat…..Yes 19 people died in a pyroclastic flow. Yes the capital got buried. Nobody believe the volcanologist when he warned about two years b4 it happened…. but about 3 years ago he came out with a statement that from all indications to him its go e dormant and the last time it was dormant was for 400 years. After this statement came out real estate prices popped 100k.
On another post I told that the northern part of the island was never in any danger except for washing if the wind happened to blow that way.
An island with low crime and a population of between 4 and 5 thousand… growing season all year round .. fish, goats chickens, cattle sheep may have a hard time too but with some preparation…bet ya it will be a good retirement and buyout location.
Live life… get knowledge… then make informed decisions. Action not just words…

Fred, give us some idea as to how you go about preparing for becoming a target for piracy. Firearms with a bit of range and lots of ammo is what pops into my mind. But I have heard that entering many foreign ports with weapons if declared or found can land you in serious trouble.
