Not always a bad thing . With the volume of business Amazon does , it’s probably overdue , to keep up with demand . If the USPS had not automated , the system would have crashed long ago . All jokes aside , they do a pretty darn good job at getting the things you send to where they need to go , on time . At times , the only way an industry can grow , is by automating some aspects of its product . Its also good for consistency in quality . Remember the old saying ” Never buy a car made on a Monday , or Friday ” ? Now thats not so true , as a robot on the line doesn’t know what day it is .

Recently, I took a class with the Seattle Amazon engineering group working on fulfillment/warehouse automation. They were pressing forward with some pretty interesting work, including using drones for deliveries. Now, if they could find a way to keep packages from being stolen off people’s porches, that would be a revelation! Amazon isn’t the only one pursuing automation– McDonalds self-help kiosks, self-checkout lanes at the grocery store, shop ahead and pickup groceries could easily be done by a robot. Lots of mechanical, electrical, and programming engineering/technician opportunities to build/repair those robots!

I ordered pizza from Dominos last night and they offered me delivery from a self-driving car. The robot apocalypse is upon us!

AnonymousNo surprise, human’s can’t keep up with the on demand society we have become. There are already enough complications with drivers pushing themselves beyond their limits to keep moving and get everything off their truck by the end of the day. I swear at least one or two of our packages have been dropkicked by FedEx from the amount of damage done to the boxes. Don’t slow down, just punt that sucker from the interstate and keep moving!

You don’t like Dominos? *gasp*
I splurged because I was home alone for once and decided to be lazy, eat pizza, and watch Netflix… I really wanted to know how they did away with Frank Underwood now that Kevin Spacey is persona non grata.

AnonymousCrow Bar, my oldest first job was riding as a helper for the Xmas season a few years ago. He ended up falling out of the truck, literally, when they were making a turn. He lost an entire day’s worth of his life from the knock on his head. I wouldn’t want a delivery job ever!!!

@daisy,
I know, I know.
But once I cracked the code on making good thin crust pizza, and then the kinda toppings I put on mine, everything else is just, blah.
This weeks pizza: The last of the fresh herbs from the garden, good mozzarella cheese (the kind that comes in a log, not pre-shredded in a bag), thick cut pepperoni from the deli, home made bacon, caramelized onions and mushrooms, grilled green peppers, broccoli, shrimp, blue cheese crumbles and smoked gouda at the last 5 minutes. -

AnonymousMaybe an Amazon warehouse would be a good place to experiment to see what happens when an EMP hits. Just to put all those theories to the test. 🙂
Beside, I really hate Amazon and stay away from them as much as I can.

I have to admit, getting pizza delivered is a novelty we haven’t had for about 6 years. 🙂

Yeah, I’ve read in this article about warehouse automation https://www.cleveroad.com/blog/best-ways-for-warehouse-optimization-leading-technologies-for-inventory that Amazon is one of the companies that use inventory management software for checking where every item is shelved and making routes for pickers to collect items in the shortest time. But I think it really makes the whole process a lot easier considering how big this company is.

I have a good friend who works in one of the Amazon distros centers.
30hrs a week. That is it. Nothing more. No benefits.
The attrition rate is so high, if they start the month with 50 new employees, they are lucky to have 6 by the end of that month.
After 2 months, he was considered a “old timer.”
As the “old timer,” he gets the joy of spinning the newbies up on how to do the job. No additional pay.
72 people on the floor is fully staffed. They average around 30. Sometimes less.He is looking for another job.
