Anyone out that way who can comment on their preps or the impacts?
I dont mind the snow, but those kinds of winds can be dangerous.

I prepped for the Big One a month ago. We were on the fringe and still had a challenge. Were not in the “blizzard” zone. I used all the pre-placed tools and the food made up ahead. Too tired to eat, let alone cook. Had laundry done so the wet clothes piled up and had clean ones to use til the worst was handled. We actually didn’t get to grocery before that one, but could easily adapt around that. Had feed and heated water for the animals..tho getting TO them was challenging…costing the most in energy!! We really weren’t hit too bad last month, but any deep snow is harsh for folks our age – with livestock. And only manual equipment. [no tractor, skid steer, Kubota, snowblower, nada] Gonna name our place: “Farm of Forty Gates”! I was very glad of all the preps I re-positioned up the the house…JIC. Mostly that’s for loss of power/HEAT – which thankfully didn’t happen. 🙂 Put all that back where it usually “lives” and didn’t bring it up for this one. At least I know EXACTLY where everything is now. Old folks gotta refresh memory frequently…hmph!
This time we just got snow and didn’t even do any laborious snow removal like last month. It’s been warmer and it will melt if we just wait a couple days…even at this altitude. Odd spring this year. But then, we didn’t get much snow accumulation. Shovels/brooms were still at the ready, of course, despite recent 60* days here.
The brunt of this somewhat weaker storm is further east of our high Rockies…..in Neb, Dakotas, IA, MN ..and still going eastward. Big MESSY Spring Storm compounded by the effects last month of the Big One. 🙁 No one is going to be happy for a while where it’s flooding…AGAIN or STILL….or the power is off. It dropped temperatures drastically. Hope folks have alternate ways or places to get warm.
OldMtWoman …glad to mostly take a buy on this one…

Thanx for posting your observations and what you did.
We had two snow storms this year that made getting to the barn with the water a bit difficult. 2ft of snow and hauling 5gal buckets is not easy.

I have to say, you guys have had a really rough winter. The snow has been really bad. Seems funny that here where we are, we got no snow. This was how it used to be back in the 50’s and 60’s. No snow and then we started getting snow much later as the years went by. You have all done well with your preps as they got you all through it safe and sound. That is the main thing. Staying safe through it all. I guess we will be preparing for hurricanes before long. That starts June 1st. So will be getting things together for that. hope we all have a mild season.

Hurricanes,,, are a whole ‘nother critter, right LilSister? I’ve only been thru one and it wasn’t directly overhead at all. Wind did seem to be blowing in one side of the house windows and out the other. [louvered windows don’t close well] The dust accumulation afterwards proved it true.
Most impressive to me was standing on shore and watching the HUGE waves eat the old wharf that had been there for a century or two. Like a mouth opened wide and closing down …taking bite after bite …. I found my own mouth hanging literally wide open in disbelief. This was not near the center of the storm at all, yet all that POWER. Uff tah! Even far away a Cat 5 still has teeth.
I did have my 2 hurricane [or tsunami] buckets always setting out on the back porch. The terrain went quite steeply up hill from the next street behind us …in case tsunami was ever an issue. Never was, thankfully. Those buckets were so very long ago and tho I might have been more prepped than 88% of others, they’d seem woefully inadequate to me now. Still, we all learn as we go…
If the Stuff Hits the Fan….all our wonderful weather forecasting/warnings/alerts [as well as rescue teams] will be gone. Anyone else besides watch and learn on barometers, rain gauge, high/low thermometers, etc? It’s an acquired skill for each region someone lives in…..and I’ve lived in quite varied climate regions. Start all over when you relocate!!!
OldMtWoman ….I’ve always watched weather closely…..cuz I’ve gotta go out and feed the animals!
