In these days of high-speed low-drag training, a couple of instructors stand out. And not because they promote “shoot like an operator” but because they teach the basics and continuously promote the basics that work.

One of the old guys nowadays is Clint Smith. For those who don’t know anything about him, he’s been keeping the good guys alive for a handful of decades.

Crusty, opinionated and with an ability to make people understand, he is one of the instructors that I unabashedly and with full credit that I quote and steal from for my own classes. Don’t reinvent the wheel.

The comment came up in another thread about using different (other peoples) guns and I was immediately reminded of a Clint-ism.

And the comments about handgun/rifle effectiveness which are always there. Another bit really worth the listen.

Other full length videos from the Smith (Thunder Ranch) library are on YouTube and while they feature a much younger Clint, the information hasn’t changed since.

They are well worth searching out. And the best part, the Smiths aren’t trying to get the old videos taken down regardless of who posts them, they just look at it as advertising.

    Great post W!

Mastery of the fundamentals is paramount. Master those, and you should be able to pick up any handgun or rifle and with a few moments of familiarization of the action, heft and feel of a firearm, be able to hit your target with a reasonable hit rate.
