Well, Jan was a cold one.
That Ground Hog’s Day winter storm is supposed to start Wed night and go through Friday. We will see!

Yeah mine starts tonight. Calling for massive blackouts in the state.

So far we are good here. Missed the ice and just got snow but we also missed the rain. Got bout 4” and it’s snowing again now. Had some travel plans but they ain’t looking good. This thing is ice from San Antonio to mix as far north as ya can go it looks like.
Dang wind chills will kill ya if you ain’t careful. Powers stayed on round here except for cars wrecking into poles and stuff
how y’all doing?
February 3, 2022 at 11:15 am #46211
It appears the ice/sleet pass us by, to the East.
Still warmer temps. Heck it was 37 degrees at 6 last night.
It is snowing, but not sticking/melting as soon as it hits the roads.
NOAA is forecasting for heavy snow tonight, 7 inches.
February 3, 2022 at 12:37 pm #46223
Well the cold weather didnt kill the fleas or the mosquitos apparently. The pupper has the latter. Vet tried to upsell Bravetco’s 3 month treatment. I went with a generic monthly tablet from Flea assassin. I did go for the 1 year heartworm injection cause missing a month can be disastrous.
Peppers are doing great. The lone tomato plant, not so much. I only saw 2 tiny tomatoes. We’ll see how february pans out. Romaine is ready to bolt, so off to find something in its place.
Canning supplies. Wallyworld doesnt have them stocked, have to get them online. Prices have been ok, but I did check once and they were out of stock.
February 3, 2022 at 12:45 pm #46225Anonymous
we got a full stock at the evil empire of canning stuff.
Ain’t growing nothing here but ice sickles 😂
I’m hopping to get lettuce for the chickens planted next week or two
February 3, 2022 at 5:07 pm #46228
It gets better. Price for a dozen pint jars went up $4.50 in a couple of weeks. Grabill canned turkey that I purchased from Pleasant Hill Grain this past fall went up $14.00. The meats are wonderful though; really tender and tasty. Looks like the canned beef is holding pretty steady, so its just pork, chicken and turkey
I have Walmart+ so playing the pricing game isnt an issue as I get free shipping.
February 3, 2022 at 7:43 pm #46231
Our Target, Wmart and big box home stores have varying supplies of jars, lids, pectin etc, I didn’t pay much attention as we’re already stocked.
My neighbor down the road is my meat supplier; his son has about 100 head and butchers one up CFC every month or so. The best angus at $6- per pound for ground.

Well I used the snow days to do some inventory of items that I’d been putting off.
The wind was so bad we couldn’t take the little one sledding like we wanted. Kept the temps at single digit or below.
I’d sealed up the coop on this storm pretty good. Good enough the sparrows were living in it too during the blast 😂
figured out I’ve still got a raccoon prowling around
February 10, 2022 at 10:40 am #46415
One thing about snow, it really lets you know what is out and about in their tracks.
Took the dogs out in the fields yesterday, me in snowshoes.
Saw what looked like 3 sets of tracks.
The only one I was sure of, was a turkey track.
The other two, looked like Coy, but they were older, and lost definition.

Did a quick declutter of the shed. Still needs repairs as there are holes and the critters are making a mess of things. The masks are in at one of our grocery stores-Winn-Dixie, so I picked up 3. There are in bulk packages, so you grab glove and take them out. I put mine in the clear produce bags.
Will be swapping out my 8 inch high bed frame for a 14 inch for storage space. I thought of the 18inch, but with the mattress it was going to be too high.
Found a nice home repair book at the thrift store.

My neighbor reports seeing coyote and wolf tracks yesterday morning. I may have to keep a closer eye on my 2 dogs, apparently the coyotes try to trick dogs into joining them for dinner…
February 11, 2022 at 3:09 pm #46476Anonymous
we used to use a Jack Russell to draw them in to us as the coyotes played their game.
coyotes favorite meal is cats

Well y’all can add felt cowboy hats to the shortage list
Man can’t even find a good one. Even called some places in Texas. Apparently they are made in America but with imported materials.
Settled for a Resistol 3X after numerous stores and a canceled order. Far cry from what I was going for
I know that ain’t no thing to most y’all but it’s just something else

I’m in the 4th day of a nasty lung infection, I bet it’s that Chyna flu! Fruits, vegetables, chili, pork roast off that 500 pound hog we slaughtered a year ago. vitamin c and d3, and a slip of horse paste on a saltine. Drinking plenty of water, taking the dogs for a walk in the woods. One jj stab last year, before I realised how bad they are. I think I’ve turned the corner on this coof, just gotta wait it out now.
My wife is in ICU (again!) as a direct result of her pack a day camels habit. How about no more smoking for you? She’s off the ventilator and coming around at her pace.
All in all, things are shaping up after a couple big holes in the road.

Ouch BarrensHoomey, I hope things continue to improve and improve quickly. Please keep us posted.
Looks like the people are waking up down here. The sales on canned goods, like soups and such usually go unnoticed; Not any more. Shelves also seem to be getting more sparse.
Matt. Cranberries are in season from October to December.I usually buy a bunch and freeze them. And yes, hot pack and water bath from what I have read.

thanks to all that wished me well., appreciate it. doing ok still this morning.have a great weekend..28 degrees outside . 73 in the house nice & warm.
February 19, 2022 at 9:00 am #46778
Had a few days of unseasonably warm, but now back to normal.
Got two more nights of cold (teens/single digits) then we begin to warm up.
Noticed song birds returning. Usually it is only crows, Blue Jays, morning doves that will over winter here.
February 20, 2022 at 7:33 am #46812Anonymous
Seen several songbirds and birds of prey back. I’m seeing buds on several trees. Supposed to have ice storm wed-Thursday though.
The weather was beautiful yesterday. Spent it all day working farm work and moving piles of wood chips from one place to another, plowing and measuring some fence that needs mending and beefing up before we put cattle on it. Old plow has a tine tear off so I’ll weld it today. Going to pickup fencing for garden. We got it all planned out and seedlings started. We’ve got two more days of good weather.
February 21, 2022 at 9:39 am #46841
Over the past two weeks, the wife and I have noted the return of song birds.
The other day I heard a Robin. Yesterday I saw one! They are usually the last to return, and a good indicator that Spring has arrived.
That is usually NOT till late March or early to mid April.

Nice Day here, sunny, wind out of West,10 mph. several Robins & 2 squirrels digging, Jonquil flowers blooming Rain coming next couple days (Good) i’m still resting that the Dr.said to do.
February 21, 2022 at 12:57 pm #46856
Upper 70s low 80s here, though it looks like a temp drop starting next. BlueJays we see year round; plus our resident redheaded woodpecker who wakes everyone up at 5am. Never saw a robin here though.
Fibro has been flaring, so I’ve been just doing a little organization and not much else. But every bit helps.

Yeah it’s hard with them flares every time a front comes in. Wife’s got that issue
February 21, 2022 at 1:41 pm #46859Anonymous
Welded up the plow we broke the tine off of. Looked at the other tine and it was weak too so went ahead and braced it in too. It was a good morning project. Didn’t waste the good weather. Only a few more hours left
I got lucky and had some steel brackets that just slid over and I was able to weld it right up with only a little grinding and one cut.

I haven’t checked in this month. It’s been a doozy. I caught a mild case of omicron, felt like a very mild flu. I experienced mild symptoms for about 3-4 days. I then had to quarantine.
I caught the omicron at a dinner with friends at a mutual friend’s house. Out of eight, seven people had symptoms (one had it about a month ago). We varied in how serious. We are all 40+. Those with underlying health conditions were much more ill and took much longer to recover. Myself and another friend had very mild cases; we both take certain vitamins and supplements. Research is showing a correlation with vitamin D deficiency and severity of COVID.
Like Crowbar, I have noticed songbirds at the feeders. We are expecting about 12 inches of snow starting today through Friday. The temp also took a five from 51 yesterday to single digits this morning (wind-chill -15).
Like Matt. I have noticed certain strange shortages. I keep about 4-6 months of dog food in the pantry. I went to get another bag and it was out plus most of the brands were out or low quantities, plus a price increase.
Has anyone noticed an increase in energy and heating costs? I have solar and a wood stove; but during winter I end up having to pay. I was surprised to see my NYSEG was double! I compared with last year’s bill. The cost of the electricity is only slightly up, but the supply charges have almost doubled.
I am happy for my stocked freezer. This week, I went to the grocery store and meat/seafood prices are way up. Also, I am noting a lot less sales. Is anyone else noting price increases? I hadn’t done a major grocery shopping since the holidays.
February 24, 2022 at 10:13 am #46963Anonymous
Well glad your better. Had it. Wasn’t much. Even my wife with lupus shrugged it off. In fact her meds helped.
Yeah everything is way up and everything is in shortages. It’s hard to have a sale unless something has happened to it. I saw some meat on sale that looked like maybe it had thawed or something the other day. Quality has definitely gone down in almost all products.
February 24, 2022 at 6:58 pm #46976
Ditto to what Matt said. Coffee was on a BOGO, but the expiration date was May. Picked it up anyway and moved my November stash to the back. Getting Sea salt still is problematic as one store was out and Wally World only had a fancy name brand. Chicken was just about wiped clean and non fat dry milk…well only one bag.
The worst part; no Pirates Booty snacks. Aldis comes close, so it looks like I just may have to head over and buy a case.
February 25, 2022 at 9:49 am #47004
Not sure who it is, but one of the ducks has started laying eggs.
Chickens have started up again, not everyday, but more than in the past 3 months.

Finally broke through the other side of the sleet/ice storm. Went to the indoor range with my son this morning for some 10mm ammo accuracy testing. SIG 180 HP, Underwood 180 HP and Steinel 220 Hardcast. That Underwood is smoking hot and the Steinel did much better than the Underwood hardcast in our Glocks. The SIG is more of a personal defense round.
We also ran some ball from Ammo Inc. it was meh ok.
All in all it was a good morning. Spent time with my son and blew some smoke 💨
February 26, 2022 at 12:40 pm #47062
Must be nice.
My range is buried under about 5-6 inches of snow, about 20 degrees.
Although a few years ago, for one of the Air Gun sites, I snowshoed it out to my rifle range, and put a rounds down range with a springer.
It was 4 degrees.

Made a grocery run. I’ve got more pasta stored than is on the shelf at Crest or Walmart
Even Amazon appears to be running out of many items at super inflated prices
February 26, 2022 at 12:45 pm #47065
It is that time of year where I am ready for winter to be over.
February 26, 2022 at 1:39 pm #47068
My apologies gentlemen. Next time I’ll provide a link or be more specific. Anyway I did go to Aldi and get their White cheddar rice/corn snacks.
Discovered a gem of a cookbook. “The Little Mountain Bean Bible cookbook. 1000 Bean recipes”. Recipes are for frozen, dried and canned, and most are pretty simple. A few though are out of date with some ingredients hard or impossible to find; eg condensed black bean soup.
Not a pasta person, but the elderlies are. They said that they were ok, still I should pick up more for them.
Amazon, oh yea. Thrift stores however arent much better. Saw an insta pot mini for $50.00. Now with insta pots the silicone ring has to be replaced periodically, if anything to get the cooking smells out. This one definitely had an odor, so add $10.00 and for the price why bother.

Pasta is thin on the shelves here too. I admit I have more on my pantry shelves then the local grocery. 😂
Corsaire. So many ways to cook beans. I have a Busch’s Bean Cookbook that has to be over 20 years old. I admit to checking out the Pirates Booty too.
Matt. I am envious. I just realized I haven’t been to a range since summer. I need to get more ammo too; but there’s been a shortage here.
Yesterday, it snowed over 12 inches; so I was snow blowing this morning. Beautiful bluebird day here although cold in the single digits for most of the day.
With everything going on in the world, I foresee more shortages; so I did a quick inventory. Good news is I have 20+ months of tp. I now have my list of items, nothing major but as winter comes to end I start to get low on certain items. I need to restock a few medical supplies as I have several items starting to get to expiration date.
My family always kept a pantry. I can’t understand how people can feel comfortable with 1-2 days worth of food in the house. A good icestorm here and you can be housebound for several days, possibly without power for a few.
February 26, 2022 at 7:00 pm #47075Anonymous
Believe me with ammo prices and shortages range time is very limited. This was ammo accuracy testing to decide what we really like. I’m going with a buddy Wednesday to sight in his rifle. I quit even taking extra ammo with me because I will burn through it 😂
I shot most of it at the 25 because the 10mm will be used for hunting. I’m able to keep them on the head but I need to tighten up. I hated to admit it but that red dot on my son’s pistol made it easier. Guess I’m getting old and not taking it well 😂
Aint it crazy that we are so bad off we’ve got more than the store!?!
February 27, 2022 at 11:18 am #47104
Going to do some reloading, but waiting till I can get out and shoot across a chrony to see how my loads do.
In the meantime, going to shoot the .177 pellet pistol.
Same again in the spring with the .22 PCP. Save on the .22LR.
February 26, 2022 at 6:55 pm #47073
Upper 70s/lower 80s for day and mid to upper 60s for evening. There typically isnt a huge difference between day and night temps here. Thats what makes the summers tough, as it doesnt cool down
Correction, my apologies to all to those who had to look up Pirates Booty.
Busch’s Bean cookbook, I’ll check that one out. The Bean Bible is from the early 90s.
Hurricane season will probs be a challenge for some. Hate to think of what the gas prices are going to be come peak season.
First aid indeed my antibiotic packets expired in January. Wont use them again as they are expensive for what you get and the packets are a pain to open.

Fixing to hand run fencing wire so I made a thing to help. The hard plastic will protect us as it spools off and we can get two hands on each side. Just pull cotter pins to load.
