ParticipantModerators please feel free to move this to a more appropriate forum.
I bought a generator a few years back. I haven’t actually run it though. (Bad me!) I bought gasoline to fuel it, but then realized that – gasoline goes bad. So, I’m going to be dumping a 5-gallon container of old gasoline at the hazardous waste event this weekend, then getting fresh gasoline, but I wanted to know how to keep it from going bad. Enter Pri-G. I’d heard about it before, that it’s better than Sta-bil for gasoline stabilization. Then I read this article and it really sold me on it. Just thought I’d pass along the info. Maybe it’ll help someone else.

ParticipantGreat info, Anna! I had not heard of the Pri-G so this was really high on my need-to-know list. As far as old gas, I don’t have a disposal center close by so I asked the local gas station owner about what they do. He said I can use that gas, in small amounts, mixed into fresh gas for my vehicle or gas-powered equipment. So I tried it in my ol’ beater lawnmower (not the newer one) and it worked out great. I got rid of all the old gas and the newer mower got a long vacation!

ParticipantDoes anyone have a safe way to store large quantities of Gas? I have looked at bulk tanks but they are not for gas just Diesel and gas has to be vented somehow.

ParticipantUse old gas as varsol that’s what it is great part cleaner.
Make it into gel fire starter.
If not too old and you are in need for it to use as fuel, separate the water, strain any solids then add 500 ml of pure alcohol. It will burn rough but will go… this is last ditch effort
If you have a tri fuel military truck engine strain check the water trap in fuel line and happy trails, those will burn strained used motor oil.
If you get premium gas it has no ethanol and will last muchance longer. I store in teflow lined 50 gallon drums they are helicopter fuel drums. It runs our 2 stroke 4 stroke and crv after 6 months no problems. It is in a shaded shed but not protected from tempretures 38+ to -40 c

ParticipantSecond on the premium and Pri-G.
Also, set up a regular quarterly rotation schedule and rotate the fuel into your vehicle. I use 5-gal cans so this is easy to do. Dump the fuel into your car, drive down to the hardware store, get Pri-G, then over to the gas station to re-fill and back to storage.
Also, both Stabil and Pri-G are essentially non-storable once opened, so be sure to purchase only enough to handle your current rotation. You don’t need to store it; if the gas stations are closed then there’s no point.

ParticipantThanks for all the great info! Had no idea that Pri-G and Stabil are non-storable once opened!

ParticipantAccording to the FAQs on GoldEagle.com Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer has a shelf life of 2 years after it has been opened. They mention that it is not as effective to use an ‘old’ bottle. I take that to mean it maintains effectiveness for 2 years, after that it doesn’t work as well. https://www.goldeagle.com/product/sta-bil-fuel-stabilizer/

ParticipantI understand, but the bottle essentially says don’t use after opening.
I’ve had good results rotating 1/4 of my supply into my vehicles every quarter, using pri-G, and premium gas. Vehicle mileage doesn’t drop. This gives me a yearly refresh cycle, which is well within the manufacturer’s recommendations.

ParticipantThis reminds me. We have 12 gals of gas stored in garden shed. Had it about 3 months. So going to use it in car and then refill cans with new gas and get the Pri-G stablizer to try out.

I’m slowly swapping everything out for li-ion, which all my tools, bike and camper are powered by. We do liberally use stabil where needed and have never had any issues.
I really want to buy a diesil, as making your own fuel is very easy and the ingredients will be easy to come by in most SHTF events.
I am currently getting myself and gear ready for a trip across America with my E-bike, which will help me to dial in my full energy needs in such a situation.
Everything is ready to go, except the bike trailer I’m building. It will be complete with a 265w panel and quite a few battery packs.

ParticipantIn the late 70’s Jim and Sally, friends of mine, her mother them Mom and Dad’s place in the country. Sally’s Mom said, “You and Jim were always out here helping, neither of your brothers bothered to be here so now it’s yours,”
I was helping Jim clear out some brush and stuff from around some of the outbuildings. We opened one door and found 4 full GI gas cans. Jim said that about 5 years earlier his late FILaw and he filled 5 cans and his FILaw put double the long term storage amount of PRI-G in each.
We went into town for a couple of things and bought some new PRI-G. We put double the long term storage amount in each one and filled the Ford tractor. You could tell by the stale smell when the old gas started burning.
We finished up that day and the next day using the old gas.
This is not a friend said he heard another guy tell the story. This is first hand anecdotal evidence that PRI-G does what it’s supposed to,

ParticipantGreat thread!
Does anyone have any knowledge about how long kerosene is good for.
I bought one of these 5 gallon sealed metal containers 3 years ago when I bought a kerosene lantern. The Q&A section of the entry says it is only good for 2 years. Anyone else have any experience with kerosene?
Thanks!

ParticipantI figure gas gets old after a few months, a little better with Stabil, and have a plastic jug of 2 stroke gas squirreled back in my garage that’s at least 3 years old. It works fine for cleaning and oiling up old rusty tools and bicycle chains, but if I needed to burn it as gas I’d mix it 1:4 with new stuff and try to get by.
As for kerosene, just dump a little in your lamp and light it up, I’d guess it would smoke more than new kerosene but may be OK unless it’s absorbed too much water from the air. I’ve used year old kerosene without a problem.
