ParticipantGood day, Trousdale here in Central Texas.
I’m getting ready to purchase a generator in the 12kw / 20kw power range.
Which would be better in a “changing world environment” supply chain disruption etc.
Diesel or Propane/Natural Gas Both have advantages but fuel is the deciding factor.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I’m looking real hard at the champion duel fuel propane and gas with the flick of the switch.
Propane is so much easier to store and haul.that one ain’t as big as you want but is what I’m looking at

ParticipantI bought a Champion, Dual fuel, elec start,7500 watt, Generator (Cosco) mounted on concrete 1/2″ all thread bolts, Harder to steal. Rented tanks at first, had to get permit..NOT hooked up to house, easier i’ll get it done later, added gas cook stove, now, no rent, auto fill. i keep 12+ gallons gas in a cooler part of my barn “OFF GROUND” on boards, prevent condensation, love it, run it every first of the month for total hour on both fuels.

How long you looking at running it? And do you have the availability to store a large tank?

ParticipantDont use cheap gas ….for generators you can get a commercial card card lock card for marked fuel.the premium is same price as regular. It makes your carburetor last way longer on any small engine and it runs better.
We had that version of a gen here but the 11200 watt one, you will need a new carb before engine dies so get one from aliexpress.com knowing takes months to arrive but 1/2 price

ParticipantOne of my neighbors has a 22 kw whole house propane generator. His house is approx 3500 sf. When our power was out in the neighborhood last fall he went through $600 of propane in 4 days. His generator ran 24/7 and powered everything. I’m not sure how many more days he had on his propane tank. I’m guessing that there was perhaps 1 or two more days of fuel left.
I have had an exterior 20 amp disconnect tied to my outside panel for over 20 years. I use a portable 8000 watt gas generator. When the power goes out briefly, we use lanterns and flashlights, heat water on the gas stove. During the 4 days of outage we powered everything (well pump, 2 freezers, refrigerator, lights) except the central AC. ( I have a window unit for that.) I used 5 gallons of gasoline (At $1.80 per) BTW: Our Bosch on-demand water heater has been chugging along for 20 years. Due to our extremely hard water, I have had to rebuild the flow regulator twice during that time.
Another neighbor has just installed a diesel generator in addition to his propane whole house Generac. The diesel is a 22kw and cost apporx.$12K. The Generac propane is for short term immediate use. I am curious to see how the diesel performs and would seriously considering diesel over propane for long term ( weeks – months) outages. Diesel should be more readily available than propane, can be stored if treated properly and should be less maintenance since the propane generators have a very finite life.
As far as propane after shtf: our delivery person said that about two years ago Homeland Security required his company to install anti- theft devices on all propane delivery trucks. The device immobilizes the truck and requires a remote key coded password.
I hope this helps.
