ModeratorYears ago I belonged to a prepper group that got together monthly and covered topics and discussions and had guest speakers/trainers etc.
They were a decent enough bunch but not everyone knew everyone or even where people lived etc.</div>
They decided to get HAMs and a group repeater. Lofty goal but I wasn’t sure I wanted to put money in. So at the meeting the roundabout discussion turned to an older lady who lived alone and she started talking about how great it’d be that she could call and get rescued.
At this point I knew it’s gonna go sideways with me but when it was my turn to speak I said the comms were great for information but there was no way I was leaving my area and family for someone I barely knew to run the Mog Mile in the middle of a large city.
The general sentiment was echoed by most but several were genuinely surprised as they thought those of us capable and equipped should come get them and openly stated so.
I stated that while I enjoyed the conversation, company, knowledge and training and that I had reciprocated with my share that was all this was. I stated that no one could even answer basic questions about my life so I’d zero expectations for them to die for me.
To say there was confusion about what “this was” was an understatement and resulted in meltdowns. It also resulted in my departure as I figured it might though I feel even today it needed saying.
The moral of this story and several others over the years is make sure you’ve a full understanding of what your in and differentiate between the training, MAG or dedicated group.

ParticipantHey Matt. Yeah I am a bit leery as well of meeting with these people in person, reason being is I don’t want to know what they have or don’t have and I don’t want them knowing what I have. It appears a lot of people in my community are starting to wake up, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on how you look at it. Supposed to be a meet up at end of month in my neck of the woods but not sure if I’ll attend. Have a good one Matt

ModeratorIt’s good to meet and idea share and train especially on non tactical items as a start. Gardening is great. Ok you know I’ve got a garden. So what? But if I can get ideas from you and/or share mine that really only benefits everyone.
IMO there’s nothing wrong with not sharing what you’ve got. You can share that you’ve got beans n rice Mylar but they’ve zero need to know inventory stock.
Definitely keep it generic for a bit.

ParticipantOk thanks Matt. appreciate you. I feel this slow burning SHTF is worse than the actual Bam it’s there in your face and all out war. I have been in fight or flight mode for damn near 2 years. Thanks again next state over neighbor.

KeymasterOkay, that blew my mind (re: the lady expecting the group to come and rescue her).
Sounds like she knew she could not make it on her own, joined the group for them to take care of her.-

ParticipantRight Crowbar. I think a lot of people are of that mindset. Like people in my own family. People really have those rose colored glasses on right now, or their heads in the sand, or both. When Shit truly hits the fan they’ll be the first to go, sad to say. A lot of people want to be rescued, not put in the time, effort, and resources to make sure they are prepared. a guy I USED to get my ammo from, key word is Used to, told me the last day I was in his store and he tried to price gouge me “Don’t you worry your pretty lil head, ma’am. They’ll be cowboys to save you”. Last time I was in there and walked out without buying a damn thing. LOL

ParticipantSpent the weekend at a family reunion with the in-laws. Other than the old line, “I’m coming to your place when SHTF”, I got the impression that the lot of them got their worldview from watching late night talk show hosts and Lord of the Rings reruns, and that, in their awareness, any societal breakdown was inconceivable now that Orange Man Bad has been sidelined. Whenever I’d bring up inconvenient topics, such as the First Amendment, or vax related deaths, they looked at me as if I was speaking in Martian. I don’t think they’ll be all that helpful in banding together with when the need arises, except on the off chance I need a Dungeons and Dragons master between chores.

ModeratorLol 😂 that’s most families I think. Even though mine lean more to the right they are worthless.
“they” being many of mine are literally the issue

ParticipantMine can’t count as useless they are a detriment to any group, want to talk about how everyone feels and that there is not meritocracy just a patronage network which they are going to get easy manager job.
Only job they are worth is composter of perfectly good food and manual labor which they have zero stamina or strength to do… doubt they could make here from cities so not a big worry.

ParticipantSend them out as sleepers into troublesome groups as a “gesture of goodwill”. They’ll eat the other guy’s food and screw up their operations.

This is a good article. However it’s strictly a guerrilla warfare group with zero mention of logistics. I believe it to be the most common type of group there is. They are prepared for one thing.
I avoid these. I am a firm believer in tactics and training and actually fighting however I’m a believer in balance above all. Everyone is a rifleman but I need medical, builders, cooks, farmers, canners, comms etc for the long term

ParticipantMy neighbors are my first line of defense. I don’t get along with all of them, but they’re here and not 3 hours away. No organization to date – nobody to lead means nobody to arrest. Everybody’s a hunter. We wouldn’t stand a chance against real military or LEO, but I’m more concerned with random meth heads looking for an easy hit. Got some good talents here – cooks, carpenters, mechanics, horsemen, meat processors, tech nerds. We even got a band, though I’m gonna need to learn more metal songs to keep up.
