Soylent Green inspired, Futuristic visions of myself as an old lady forced by hyper-inflation into choosing less acceptable sources of nutrition are the reason for my interest in prepping. I have, for many years, stocked up when prices were low, which has seen me through lean times. My interests lie in gardening, food preservation and preparation. When I got to the point of buying surgical tools and researching simple surgery like appendectomy, I wondered if I’d gone too far. I do love the tidbits of knowledge offered in communities such as this. As the prepping community grows, I honestly believe that, at the time a catastrophic event occurs, those of us who have prepared will voluntarily foster kindness and care toward those less ready. I have a new vision that is far removed from the apocalyptic version we are fed such as displayed in The Road Warrior or The Walking Dead, where everyday one faces a new threat. As human beings, we have always formed into communities, and will always do so. I don’t believe in a dog eat dog world.

    Hi there! Welcome.

I think you are right when you say we always form communities, but I think the important thing to consider is that humans have always been tribal in nature. I highly suggest reading Warriors and Worriers. It isn’t about prepping but rather about gender differences seen consistently throughout cultures.

One of the points the author makes is the argument that men build coalitions and community for the purposes of defense and women remain primarily focused on the survival of their own offspring. That is a pretty shoddy summary so read the book before judging it for my poor characterization.

I do think that a lot of preppers/survivalists tend to take a more negative view of humanity that necessary at times, but I don’t think we can expect people to pull together and lay down their lives for strangers. I think if we want a functioning community we have to build it before the SHTF. If that’s where your heart is and that’s what you’re working on I think that’s fantastic.

It is the spann of time from ” collapse” till banding together that one must be prepared to ride out.

    Hi tbird!

The decade I lived, loved and loafed in NE New Mexico were some of the best years of my life. I miss it so much, but doubt I’ll ever make it back.

I agree with you about communities, Murphy thrives on messing with lone wolves. Trouble is, communities are made up of people…and lord knows the goodness of good people puts them at a distinct disadvantage when faced with bad people in sheep’s clothing. There are no utopias, plan accordingly.
