Yes, the corruption is as bad as you’ve heard. The taxes are awful too. But our large extended families and the family farm made the decision for us.
We’re a homesteading/homeschooling family with six kids (though number six won’t be making an appearance until spring). Prior to buying the small family farm our options for self-reliance were a bit more limited. We are really grateful for the land and the freedom that comes with it.
We have a couple big gardens, a small-scale orchard we add a bit to every year, a passel of laying hens (the roosters were delicious), two goats, a newly made steer calf and a little Jersey heifer calf that will be our family milk cow.
We are blessed to have some wonderful mentors who have been running a small scale diverse pasture-based farm for many years. We get lots of chances to go help on their farm and get the real-life experience that has proven invaluable. We spent a lot of years reading and watching youtube videos to prepare for homesteading, but boy is the simple life FAR from simple!
I’m excited to get to speak to other like-minded folks while maintaining PERSEC.
