ParticipantHi folks. I’m sure plenty of you folks know this hack already but it never hurts to bring it up again for those that don’t or have forgotten it. I have used this in the past and it made the difference between food in the freezer and a lost animal that went to waste.
Let’s say you’ve been in the stand most of the day and true to Murphy’s Law your target walks out just prior to losing light to shoot. You make the shot and the critter doesn’t drop in it’s tracks (Murphy has a strong game) and it disappears into the woods and over the next ridge. You know you have to wait and let it lay down and bleed out because you don’t want to chase it and possibly lose it. The wait seems to take forever but finally you climb down and start the tracking. You’ve pulled out your headlamp. You find the initial hit and good blood. Hopefully Murphy lets you slide a little tonight. You follow your quarry up the ridge but as you proceed your blood trail begins to dwindle. Could it be laying just on the other side of the ridge? Or did you not get as good a hit as you thought? You get to the top of the ridge and find another blood spot but you can’t find anymore track or blood. What I learned to do was at that point go back to your last blood spot. Reach into your pack and get your bottle of hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle out. Then move in a back and forth arc spraying your peroxide giving it time to work. The peroxide will “boil” on any blood drops you missed and hopefully you’ll be able to pick up the direction of travel and recover your quarry. Luckily I’ve never had to try and use it in a rainy condition or just rained situation but I’m sure it wouldn’t be very good if I did but I have used this and it saved me losing my deer. Hopefully this will help someone keep food on the table. The way things are going we are going to need all the tricks we can get to keep food on the table. Good luck and stay the course.
