Even if you don’t have the tacticool models there are some solid lessons in this video
growing up I wanted anything but a lever gun cause that’s all us poor folk had. Now that I don’t care what folks think and just enjoy them there’s a couple that trip my trigger

ParticipantThey are classic fun , but the reason they were not adopted as a standard weapon , anywhere in the world , is the poor handling prone . I have an Army issued 1895 carbine in 30-40 Krag . Last patent date 1915 . Has a broken and field repaired butt stock . May have served in WW1 . They were issued in small numbers to support troops , like truck drivers , etc , and cavalry . Where they need something , but where a full size rifle , would be a nuisance .

KeymasterI have kicked around the idea of getting one, but just have not really decided on the caliber.

Yeah I’m unenthusiastic about most chamberings
30-30 is a yawn and I’ve had failures at 200 on deer
45-70 is ok but the low round count bothers me
pistol calibers are ok
maybe if I lived more in the woods I’d get more excited

ParticipantBe careful of rechambered rifles . The 1895 carbine I mentioned above is a sweet gun ! It was supposed to be chambered in 30-40 , as a result , you can shoot it with one hand ( like a good cavalryman ) . It has a twin sister , last patent date 1927 , it was up gunned to 30.06 , it has every pad you can put on it , and it will still blow your shoulder out ………………………….I have fired it twice in my lifetime , and have not touched it sense . The 95 was never designed for that cartridge , and it shows .

ParticipantGot to see my neighbor’s 30/30 Marlin in action yesterday. Nice lightweight gun with a classic cartridge – it’s got a bark – and a big old blob of lead that goes on and on.

ParticipantLove mine, but yes the item has all the flaws pointed out already.
Pain in the butt to operate prone.
Generally chambered in rounds that have mortar-like trajectories (although the new Henry “Long Ranger” seems to be addressing that.
Capacity is less than almost any semi-auto.
Chambering a fresh round is generally faster than a bolt, BUT I would be it’s slower than the new straight-pull bolts. Additionally, many lever actions have you worry about impaling your finger on the trigger tip as you close the action.IF I lived in a place where semi-autos were banned, than a lever actions (possibly in a pistol caliber?) would be my “assault weapon” equivalent for use at semi-short ranges before switching to a sidearm for real close.
Just my two cents from limited exposure (I do use a lever to hunt thick woods every fall).

I think not having iron sights is a mistake. The mags could help with emergency loading issues but don’t allow topping off easily. You need to drop the mag replace with a fresh one and top it off when safe to do so.
The price hurts my eyes too -

KeymasterYeah, agree with you on the lack of iron sights.
Or at least have it come with the capability to mount iron sights from the factory.
Wondering if this is pre-emptive move around a possible “assault” rifle ban.
