ParticipantI had to replace my 15 year old mattress cover due to it being washed so much that it was lumpy. Now I am wondering how I could use it to make other things. I am thinking about cutting out for a few potholders by cutting out 5 inch squares and sewing the edges together.
But was wondering if anyone here has any ideas on what you could make from an old mattress cover. This is a queen size and is cotton filled though in some places the cotton is bunched up rather bad. Otherwise I think I could refurbish it for something.
I am open to any ideas. Thanks

ParticipantNamelus, these are all good ideas. Though I don’t have a dog anymore nor a truck. But can make a dog bed for my granddaughter’s dogs. Would make a nice Christmas gift. I am also looking to use some of it for padding for table runner.

Participantlittle sister, One idea, make “sit upons” for little ones. Cut large squares out and sew edges like a pillow, you can add a bit of stuffing inside if you want, close up and maybe do a decorative blanket stitch around the edge. Kids can use them to sit on a hard floor. I did that one Christmas for my nieces and nephews. In fact my nephew’s husband wants one for himself, even though he’s an adult, he found it while they were packing up for their move.My nephew forgot he had it (pays to go thru old boxes now and again, right LOL).

ParticipantMama cando, That would be a great idea. I think I have enough of that old cover to make a couple of those and a dog bed for my granddaughter’s dogs. Then maybe a few small items. I have already started to cut enough for the dog bed, so will do my measurements for the sit upons.

ParticipantLil Sis, glad you like the idea. It will be something who ever gets them may treasure and pass on to their kids. I think I made mine 15″ x 15″, size of a small throw pillow. Just enough for their butts to be on when on the floor. If you have enough left over you might think about doing up some coasters or hot pads for the table. My sister (the tailor) did canning jar covers. She put material on the lid part with a little stuffing and glued the ring around the edge of the lid and put pins in the jar. Made it as a Christmas gift for an office party she went to one year. Lid was glued to the ring and it then screwed on the jar.

ParticipantI would make some large floor pillows to sit on while reading, doing yoga, or tv watching. Have you priced those pillows? Minimum starting price of $60!! I looked at my spaniel’s dog beds, and thought hhmmmmm…….. No kidding, I paid $40 for dog beds at Costco for 40 inch dog bed. A floor pillow that size is nearly $100! With a queen size to work from, I bet you could get 2 large floor pillows, and use different patchwork fabrics for sides and backing.

ParticipantYears ago I used an old mattress pad as the batting for a quilt I made. I don’t do proper quilting with hand stitching and perfect geometry, but it worked. It ended up being warmer than a regular quilt (because it was thicker). We literally wore it out. The dog bed idea is a good one, or one for cats.
