I used this old projection screen from a school being thrown away to make me a solar lens fresnel thing I can heat water with or start fires without using non renewable resources. It’s adjustable for height and angle. The wood is some scrap.

ParticipantI like it. I have heard of that before using fresnel from those old type TV’s. I heard they work really well once you get the hang of it.

ParticipantI have one made from old projection TV but you need to polish it and that takes time plus it needs a solid frame to keep from flexing… can get at junk yards and homes for free as they weigh a ton to move

I’ve got 2 tv ones in the garage still waiting on me to get around to them. Your right though it’s gonna take some framing to keep them stiff.
I’d like to see your framed in one.

ParticipantClarification please? By ‘old’ …’projection type’….TV…. Do you just mean the regular TVs before flat screen? Cuz I got a big old one that’s been sitting useless and large and in the way. Have no idea how to extract that part from the rest of it but….if it’s worth this project, I can figure it out.

The shape of a projection type tv is similar to this. Normally there is a ring of screws around the screen itself and it’s not terribly hard to get into and remove the useful part. There are a few mirrors in there that might be useful too.

The overhead projector I used for this project looked like this. The lens was very easy to acquire. Also I took the magnifying glass and mirror from the top portion. The magnifying glass to start fires without using a non renewable source.
