One of the things that keeps a lot of folks from being as prepped as they’d like to be is money. (Or the lack thereof.)
Today’s challenge may not seem very related to prepping, but if your finances are keeping you from being as prepared as you’d like to be, then you’ll see this is very closely related.
List some items on Craigslist or your local garage sale website.
We all have those things kicking around the basement or attic or spare room that we no want or need. But you know the old saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Hop on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or your local garage sale website and list your items for sale.
Be very careful of scams. We recently had a piece of furniture for sale online and a number of people contacted us, offering to send a certified check or money by PayPal and have their “shippers” pick up the furniture. What happens with this particular scam is that they end up with your furniture but the check, even though it appears to be certified, is no good and you’ll be on the hook for the money as far as the bank is concerned. Be strict about cash only and in-person transactions. As well, unless the item is to large to easily transport, meet in a public place for the transactions.
What will you sell?
Do you have any items you can list to raise some money for prepping? What will you sell? Do you have a creative way to sell them aside from online? Share your ideas!.

I am a hoarder… I don’t sell anything except those made to sell… ie leaf springs…. turn into blades then sell…. animals raise and sell… stuff no way more is way better…. that’s what you get a person with everything storage.

Just put some hay on Craigslist.
The goats acted like it was the best hay ever when I brought home a sample bale. Now, they act as though I am trying to poison them with it.
Stoopid goats.
Will get some fresh alfalfa to replace the dreaded clover they despise.

I recently had a group garage sale (with friends). I made money ($1500) off of items I sold to my friends. Lol! I donated the rest of the items to charity.
After the garage sale, I decided to just invite friends over to look at items i wanted to purge and then just donate.

Ack…..toooo complicated for me. As we get closer to our clearing out, we will have a garage sale. Until then, I have no idea how to do something piece by piece when we live so far out in NoWhere. Not Internet savy enough for Craig’s list, etc. VERY wary of stuff like that.
AH…but I did offer some unused horse equipment to some neighbors recently. Haven’t heard back from them yet.
OldMtWoman …emphasis on OLD somedays…

We just got back home late yesterday with lots of fresh veggies to can up ready-to-eat meals. (Grocery is 1.5 hours away, we live way out in the boonies.) I do have hubby’s office “work shirts” (ie, dress shirts, many of which are brand new, only worn once, if at all) to sell, but with all the canning I have in front of me, I do not have the time to wash, press, photo, and list them right now. This will have to wait for a week or so, while I finish the canning in front of me.

Already have items on CL. Got one response, she offered me more than what I had listed the dishes for and take down my posting. Then she wanted me to accept a “cashiers” check from her husbands bank. Told her NO, sorry cash only as we had been burned before, that was the end of that. I mean IF they were going to the bank for a cashiers check, why not just take out the money?

I’ve been doing a major decluttering effort this past month in my house and have given lots away to my grandchildren and donated tons of stuff to local thrift stores. So, I don’t really have anything to sell plus I don’t feel up to the bother of trying to sell something. I am fortunate to have “enough” to meet all my real needs and I like giving things away.
Hey, Oldmtwoman….I know that “old” feeling all too well these days.

@Pony Maroni,
What kind of goats do you have?
With the exception of one moldy bale, mine have always mowed right down.

We have already sold everything we could through a yard sale. We have scaled down about all we can at this point. But we are doing well enough that we have been able to stock as need be. I just bought new sheets for both beds at a great sale as some of mine were worn out. Went to store today and found meat reduced. So was able to get some roast and steaks at a great price. Will be getting things ready to can my beef stew tomorrow. My freezer is slammed packed again. But I didn’t want to pass up the great sales today. Took DH to doctor this morning and he got an antibiotic. So hoping this will clear his sinus infection up. Doctors just do not want to give them to you even when you are blowing out green. So finally was able to get doc to give him some. Went to pick it up just to find out our pharmacy is shutting down. Everything is going to be transferred to Walgreen. I hate that place for RX’s. They don’t give you the full amount and you are paying for it. They have pulled some things so off looking into another pharmacy. Might try Harris Teeter. But will need to check that out first. We are good for 90 days right now so have some time to check things out.
We took a lot of things to thrift store that we could not sell. We have no bills other than insurances and utilities. We don’t eat out much and try to keep our money built up for emergencies as well. So when it comes to stocking food, and whatnot for prepping we have been doing fairly well at this point. I do need some things that are a bit pricey but saving and watching for a good sale.

The things that could and actually should be sold are stuffed away in relatives home. Will certainly sell some things before I move
@littlesister. Try https://www.blinkhealth.com/. they are quite competitive price wise when it comes to medications

We have a local ‘flea market’ twice a year so we sell our yard sale items there. Just when I think I have pared down there is a whole bunch more to get rid of. We put the money toward our emergency fund.

Thank you Corsaire. I will check into that. Maybe I can save some money on some of the higher price RX’s.. I did check and I can pick up at Harris Teeter or mailed to me. Sounds good.

Had a yard sale recently and did well. Will do it again.

I have nothing to sell today. I am pretty much a “ if you don’t love it or use it get rid of it … sell or donate person “. What has worked very well for me (had a garage sale once & it was much more work than worth it) is Facebook market place. I used Craig’s list twice successfully but was always uncomfortable with random strangers coming to my home. With Facebook market place I have had the opportunity to check out the potential buyers & there is a trail of the conversations. I have been very comfortable with this & if I didn’t feel good about someone inquiring I moved on. I very successfully sold a coffee table, vacuum cleaner, end table, lamps and other items & met some great people. Always happy when something leaves my home & goes to someone who will love & appreciate it while making some cash on the side!

Hmmm, I can’t think of anything I have that needs to go at the moment. But I’ll check for anything I might need.

LOL Muffy! I think I aged more today….uff ta!
Also remembered we have a notice up at the local feed store. We’re trying to reduce a few livestock. So far we’ve had one inquiry….
THAT would reduce winter feed bills ….and possibly more important, winter chores. So we might have to pursue that one further afield to get some action.
OldMtWoman …that counts, right? 🙂

I team up with my friends and add stuff to their yard sales. Old books, movies even tools. I do it as I am downsizing just in case I lose the place I live at

We plan on cleaning out and selling stuff soon. Have to wait for the heat to settle down and make sure all these tropical storms/Hurricanes pass before we clean out the shed. Live waaaay to far out for a yard sale. Tried having one at my brother’s a few years ago and only made a few bucks. Totally wasn’t worth it. This time we’ll be using Facebook Marketplace.

I have 1/2 pints, pints, and quarts of honey from my hives listed on Facebook Marketplace. It’s listed on Craigslist also but in the past 2 weeks I haven’t heard from anybody. The Marketplace is much better for getting rid of single items.

I have had a couple of auctions, sold items at the flea market, and now have two guys who buy “estates” who are coming to give me a price on the rest of the things left to sell. But I also have some of my husband’s hunting clothes that another man is going to buy and some of his hunting equipment is going to another. The more that goes out the door, the less that I have to deal with!

12: Have a couple of tables that we decided not to hold onto for the kids, so listed them on FB marketplace. Have not had any response. Do have a group of items to take to Habitat for Humanity, so man include them if the tables are still herein a couple of weeks. Not sure if there’s anything else that someone might want to buy!

I have been working on clearing things for awhile. Selling what I can, giving away or throwing away what I can’t

We got rid of a lot of stuff last year when we moved. Anything now is little stuff like clothes that can be donated. I did start a part time business the beginning of the year. It’s not bringing in much yet, but hopefully year 2 will bring in a little more that this year has.
