    TGIF!

It’s Friday night, time to kick back and put your feet up. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still do a prepping challenge!

Tonight, have a movie marathon. Look for a good survival movie or series and hang out with your family to watch. Take note of the silly mistakes the characters make and think about what you’d do differently. Use it as an entertaining thought exercise.

What are you going to watch?

What are you watching? Is it a movie you’ve seen before? Tell us about your movie night in the comments!

We have several DVD’s on this list, but we have decided on Dante’s Peak.  (Always been a big Pierce Brosnan fan!!)  Been quite some time since we have seen it.  Pop up a big bowl of popcorn and enjoy the movie!!!

Thanks Namelus!!!  I had not heard of the Matador, so have put it in my cart at Amazon!  I also enjoy Greg Kinnear.  I also found a couple of others that sound intriging (sp?).

We ended up watching the original War of the Worlds.  Couldn’t find my copy of Dante’s Peak.  ARGH!!!  Any way, was thinking, another good mini series to play “What they did wrong” with is the “V” mini series.  We should watch that again sometime soon!!

Hmmm….I’m not much for any type of movie that causes me to stress out, so that eliminates a bunch of the survival type movies suggested. In years past I have watched The Edge with Anthony Hopkins, Castaway with Tom Hanks and the Poisidon (sp) Adventure with Shelly Winters and others. As I’m familiar with those movies I might have a go at watching one of them again.

More recently, I’ve watched a number of the BBC documentaries where folks recreate living and working in Tudor times and the efforts made by Great Britain during WWII to provide food for their island. I think I’ll try some more of the BBC documentaries. That’s about all the excitement I need. 🙂

We just recently watched The day after Tomorrow, love that one!  And its cold weather focused so more relevant to us here in the North. Also the most recent Walking Dead season – much more realistic than previous seasons of what SHTF would be like. On Netflix A Quiet place was cool.

I loved the movie Book of Eli. We have seen that one now 2 or 3 times. My grandson while he was here last staying for a couple of weeks got me into watching The Walking Dead with him. Red Dawn was another good one. We have seen a few of these movies. Swiss family Robertson, Poisidon Adventure, Behind enemy lines, Jericho and many others.  Don’t have time to watch a movie tonight, but tomorrow we will have more time to watch a couple of movies.  Been canning all day and the kitchen right now is a mess. So trying to get that cleaned back up again.

Okaay, I’m a book person and I’ve read/seen several of those 50 movie titles.  Read the whole Divergent series, The Postman.  Don’t forget Robinson Crusoe..the original!  It’s long and in old English.

I’ve read hundreds of Dystopian eBooks….all free, of course.  Some I wanna smack the author up side the head….y’know?  Cuz they are SO wrong about some things they should not be wrong about!  But most are of some value.  I give any author credit for finishing/publishing.  I write but never finish.

Saw long ago: Hunger Games, Outbreak, Red Dawn original, Book of Eli, War of the Worlds original…

Dante’s Peak…hoped DH had this one to watch again but no….  What DO you do when you have a blinded/afraid/foolish/stubborn/beloved/  one in your family that refuses to GET OUTTA DODGE???  Kids loved their Grma…..and it nearly got everyone killed cuz she had her Normalcy Bias set on 100%. “It’s never been a danger before, so it won’t ever.”  That was a very real part of that movie….easily happen in any of our family groups.  That was my take-away pondering for that one.

Swiss Family Robinson was one of my favorite childhood books.  I keep rereading it every decade or so.  Disney movie was disappointing.  Book was much more detailed, as always.  But I loved seeing the tree house at Disneyland CA.  [Yes, I investigated the mechanisms of that tree house as an adult! LOL ]  That was my survival plan..tree house.  LOL  Sparked preparedness in me as a child….but then, I ALWAYS brought the proverbial ‘kitchen sink’ along when I went anywhere.  Even when I was little.  Thot Girl Scouts were lame and wanted to do what the Boy Scouts did.

So since DH is the movie person in this household and picks up used DVDs, I checked with him this morning.  He has Volcano [Tommy Lee Jones].  Apparently LA is erupting instead earthquake.  Hmm, do I have the energy today for trauma/drama/stress?  [ I hear you, Muffy!!]   Not kidding this time.  I’ve been barely able to walk to kitchen this day after a rough time yesterday.

But…I’ll give this a try……if I can figure out how to do a DVD in my laptop.  Not a real techie person, mind you.  I’ve never played a DVD before in the lap top.  But hey, I’ve played a cylinder recording…ever heard of THAT ancient technology.  Pre-old flat disc records….way before ’45s.    LOL

Absolutely loved the  movie Birdbox, series Black Mirror ( so disappointed the latest. Series was only 3 episodes) & so often lately have thought about  the movie Soylent Green ( how close to possible it is today & how far fetched impossible science fiction it seemed when I saw it so many years ago when it came out).

Not sure where to find it now but Childhoods End is a great movie/series as well as Into the Wild, Hunger Games, The Book of Eli, & 127 Hours all excellent

From the recommendations today I am going to binge Westworld & Jericho.

I have always liked books and movies about survival and woods lore.  I used to check out such books as a grade schooler.  Part of me likes the battle against the elements and of course part of me likes my creature comforts.  I was accused as o kid of trying to bring the outside in.                                                                                                     Lately I have been reading books about the WWII era.  True stories- my father was one of the GIs who liberated a concentration camp and I remember sugar being rationed and picking up kindling in the alleys to start coal fires with a wagon and my mother.  Tow of my favorite books are “The Last Jews in Berlin” (where they hid in plain sight and survived) and “Paris Underground” (where an Englishwoman and an American tried to leave Paris when the Germans took over the city and wound up not leaving but with a downed British flyer in the truck of their car.)

I have enjoyed watching Alone, Frontier House (in Montana and in Texas), Homestead rescue, The Last Alaskans, The Wheel, Naked and Afraid, Bear Grylls, and other shows about survival.  Haven’t watched Bushcraft Build Off so will try that one.  About Frontier House- the teenagers there in the end found it much more interesting than going to the mall when they got back.

If you read about the Donner party you should do it in a blizzard- makes it more real.  I remember an old movie about a ship sinking and people in a lifeboat.  In fact the name may have been “Lifeboat.”  Made me think that if I was on a ship I would not sleep naked.

Currently I’m in the middle of a book – a memoir about growing up in Germany in the 30s and 40s.

Wood runner, Yup it was Lifeboat with Marlena Dietrich. As for me I re watched The Day After Tomorrow while waiting for Son1 & family to show up, got a chuckle (again) when the homeless guy was teaching the privileged kid how to insulate with the book pages to keep warm. Thought when I first watched the movie how convenient the fireplace was workable. Given what I believe, if that is a real building that fireplace would have been blocked off years before and would have been unusable but it made for a good story about using what ya had to survive.

Cool, I’m gonna have to look for some of these, thanks! We watched Terminator Salvation last week and Red Dawn (’84) last month. Have seen several of these before, but there’re quite a few we’ve missed.

I watched “Red Dawn” (1984). Growing up in 80s, I remember seeing it on the big screen. Lol. One comment, the winter would have been more harsher than portrayed in the movie. Also, the supplies looked very mean for the number of people.

Ugh, I remember why I don’t like movies.  Always tech difficulties with our old devices and not-new DVDs.  At least 4 restarts to keep the thing going.  🙁

And….I DEFINITELY don’t like the tension of action/disaster movies.  It feels VERRRRRY horrible to my disturbed nervous system. { sigh  }   OTOH {OnTheOtherHand}, ….TENSION is exactly what any crisis or StuffHitsFan is going to be.  With aging, there really isn’t any “thrill” with tension….it’s an ENERGY-BLEED!  And a serious one!

In the past couple decades, I’ve tried to cultivate a calm and accepting attitude towards events that go off the rails…..with very mixed results.  If it’s a situation like A)  No Electric…very calm.  BTDT that it’s familiar.   B)  If it’s a medical emergency that looks immediately serious…I could go either way.  I’ve done 1st Aid since my teens.  Usually calm but some situations would not be easy to be calm within.   C ) If we need to EVAC in front of oncoming fire….I can do the EVAC efficiently but I’ll be bleeding energy badly because while it’s familiar, it’s so very seriously dangerous.  D)  Full blown StuffHitsFan?  Ugh!

After watching “Volcano” I was super-hyped.  Annoying that I fall into a movie…NOT real…and still get that energy-bleeding reaction.  So I read Anne of Green Gables to calm down…so I could go to sleep!!!  That’s my antidote to tension.  I fall as easily into a calm story as an anxiety-producing one.  Also works for anxiety in real life.

In light of this realization, I’m glad my Kindle has plenty of both kinds.  Definitely have both in paper books too.  If I need CALM during a real crisis, and have the safety/time to read simple stories….might be seriously helpful for stopping energy drain.

Volcano has many holes-in-reality….but it was fine.  I think the horror for me….I kept thinking:  WHY are all these people still so close to this disaster?  Get them outta there!  WHY are all you people standing around thinking about your homes?  Get you and your loved ones outta there!  Come back when/if it’s safe!

OldMtWoman  ….disaster action movies..ick.  But one can always learn something!!

What a great list! I have seen most of the movies but only a few of the series. Hubs and kids aren’t exactly on board for prepping/survival shows but I’ll see if I can sneak them in over the next few weeks, haha!

Loved Jericho and Revolution. Watched Red Dawn when it came out and then again a couple of years ago. I have seen several of the movies. DH always watched westerns and we both would watch some of the survival movies together. I started watching Jericho again cause it was one of my favorites.

Hunger Games and Dante’s Peake are some of my favorites from your movie lists and DP just played last weekend. The main characters tend to stay calm and seek advice, form a plan and take action. There’s always a slew of characters that panic, stress out and can’t cope or choose some terrible choices including blocking out the need to take action/move/apply necessary strategy, etc.

The Day After Tomorrow is one of my favorite movies.  I’ve watched it about a dozen times.  I completely forgot about the show Jericho until I read some of the other posts.  It’s now on my watchlist.  I loved the 1st season of Revolution, but then it got weird.

I read a book ‘We are Unprepared’ about a year and a half ago.  I found it very thought provoking, because it gave so many different views the characters had about the impending storm.

    Day 13 – Survival show.

We have the CD set of “Good Neighbors.” I love it. Living in the city and yet trying to be self-sufficient brings huge chuckles, and they make it entirely do-able. I really wish I could get the series Jericho on CD. Will need to look for that.

Recently we watched “The Day after Tomorrow” and I felt cold throughout the movie. Living in MN, it would be very realistic to have to move through the deep snow and below zero temperatures. We have good gear for that. Could use some facemasks though. Snowshoes would be helpful, too, during the winter if there were no snowplows. At my brother’s place, on a lake, snowshoes would be a huge benefit.

I really enjoy the Kilcher family and how they make do with everything. I learn a lot from them about how to garden and preserve and make things from scratch.

DH and I watched that show long long ago…..back when we still had TV.  Enjoyed it greatly.  Loved how they got the lady neighbor reluctantly enjoying them despite their “low” lifestyle.  Tom/Barbara…..and …?
