There is an uptick of preventable injuries when emergencies happen and the injuries I’m speaking of are completely unrelated to the disaster you’re facing. The reason a lot of folks get hurt when using the tools they’ve put ahead for an emergency is that they aren’t accustomed to using those tools.
Things like chainsaws, axes, and even that big knife in your bug-out bag can turn against you if you don’t handle it carefully and comfortably.
So tonight when you’re making dinner, use your big prepper knife in the kitchen for cutting up food. (After washing it carefully of course!) If you do this regularly, you will be more comfortable with it when it’s time to use it out in the field.
You may need to sharpen your knife after using it like this. You can find a video about sharpening knives here. This is another really important skill to have and many folks have no idea how to do it.
What kind of knife do you have in your emergency supplies?
Do you have a big hunting knife in your emergency supplies? A different kind of knife? Share with us how you used it in the kitchen and whether or not you felt comfortable with it.

Actually, I am not all that good with a knife. Yes, I do use one when I am cooking (a small one), but I have to be very, very careful. There has been many times that I end up cutting myself while cooking. My husband usually does most of the cooking anyway, because I am not that good a cook, and am dangerous with a knife. My youngest son is an excellent cook, and has been playing with knives since he was 4 years old. Used to scare me to death, but his dad said to let him be. I guess it woked cause he never cut himself, and as I said, he is an excellent cook. So, hoping to avoid a trip to the ER, I will forego this challenge. Maybe I can talk hubby into using the camping knife for dinner, although he doesn’t need any practice.

I don’t have a big hunting knife in my stuff I think because to me so many other items were higher priority to purchase for my BOB. However, I’ll use this challenge today to go through my BOB looking for whatever sort of knife/knives I do have in there. It’s also the first day of Fall which is a good time I think for me to go through that bag again, making certain it is up for the colder months ahead.I checked it last Spring but I’ve added some stuff to it since then. And, I will rethink again whether at my age and circumstances I should purchase one of the big hunting knives I think you are talking about. Happy first day of Fall!!!

Actually knife skills (of the non-combat variety) are important.
I know of a few of those one night/session cooking schools that even offer knife classes.
Having butchered my own hogs, I have really learned how to use the boning knife, the schimitar, even the bone saw to great effect.
IMPORTANT TIP: While a sharp knife can be dangerous, a dull one is even more so!

I have a fairly good set of kitchen cutlery that we keep sharp. We both know how to sharpen the knives now thanks to Son2 (manager/ butcher). I also have a small chinese style cleaver that I was gifted by my BIL before he passed. That is the “knife” I use most and it gets cleaned immediately after I’m done with it and put away. Have a couple of folding knives in the BOB but I don’t think they are hunting knives per se. Will have to rethink what I carry in the BOB. I did pick up a couple of the credit card knives from the expo last Saturday. Will have to see if they get noticed if we go any where by plane.

So far the only knife I have in my supplies is a Leatherman. I do have a limb saw which I use a lot. I have practiced sharpening axes but I am not really comfortable with those wicked looking knives. My husband is and I know it is a skill I should develop.

In the emergency supplies, I second Dala’s Leatherman. It’s my husband’s daily go-to knife, and is just an all-around great tool.
The kitchen knives are for cooking and butchering. We have a good collection, and keep them sharp.
It is so important to keep the knives sharp, and to remain aware while using them.

ahhh so many blades to choose from…..we slaughter every 14 days so knife work is a must. Doing it quick sharp and sanitary is a must for health of the consumers.
Razor sharp every blade but the butter knife.
For bob there is 4 knives inside a scalpel, kabar style, a small folder leatherman and a boar blade… it’s a second part to a metal spear/walking stick

I use knives all the time when cooking. The one I cut meat with, I call the cleaver. It is a very large deep knife. I use it when I am cutting up a lot of beef. I do have a couple of folding knifes in my bob and I keep a pocket knife in purse. DH has a fillet knife he uses to filet fish. I also have a boning knife for deboning chicken. I used that one when I was cooking dinner tonight.

🙂 I am a knife person. I have such a variety cuz I need each one for a specific type of use. Don’t know why, but I like them all. Kitchen ones and utility ones and NICE ones! [ Things like razor blades, on the other hand, REALLY give me the creeps! Go figure!]
I just noticed a couple days ago how very dull and [ack!] dirty my SwissArmyKnife [SAK] is right now. I carry/use that all the time. Need to fix that today! I’ve handled most of my knives a lot. I can think of two…one of them is my larger 119 Buck knife…that I haven’t handled as much. They would be good candidates for today. I have a cheaper, utility knife similar to the Buck knife in size that I’ve used for EVERYthing thru the years. Not afraid to abuse that one. I’m more choosy with the Buck knife, because this is a classic one. Scored it cheap at garage sale and about dropped my jaw at the price I saw on the Buck website today. By the maker’s mark, Buck can tell when a knife was made. Mine’s between 1972 and 1986.
DH bought me the other knife. That’s a risky purchase cuz it needs to fit a person’s own hand and feel balanced. But it does fit. 🙂 It’s a different configuration than I’ve worked with – Texas Toothpick. It has an odd curve that fits my hand but the blade is more long/slim than I’m used to handling. ‘Fraid it could be a candidate for a mishap from unfamiliarity.
So today I cleaned/sharpened SAK. Used the Buck to cut meat. Used a large folder knife from my BOB to cut down boxes that needed to be stored flat. Used the Toothpick to do a number of things….and just rolled it around in my hand, getting used to it. Rather wicked sharp but ….I like it. Choose the right knife for the right chore….if you can. Otherwise improvise.

I’m assuming that’s what’s getting me that NoYouCan’t message???

With that knife, it was not much different than using a chef knife. The chicken, onions, garlic, all cut up easily.
Now, if the recipe called for peeling something, using that vs a potato peeler, that could get interesting. Probably just slab the potato.

I use my knives- have too many- need to thin them out.
Favorites are a case knife bought years ago; butchered many a deer with it, and a western from Boulder Co that I found at a rummage sale. That one had been abused and I need to sharpen it. Both have leather handles and I use then often as well as other specialty knives. My Dad could sharpen a knife (or hatchet) better than anybody and he taught me how to do it although I’m not as good as him.

I have my favorite kitchen knives and that’s all I use. Years ago, I used an unfamiliar filet knife and cut my thumb wide open. The only time I’ve ever had stitches (besides giving birth).

Wow. I read this challenge right before lunch prep.
I have three different knifes (small, medium, large) in my bag. I decided to use my all purpose handy dandy Swiss army knife for lunch prep. The knife did a good job on the smaller veggies (carrots, tomatoes). I would need to use my large knife if I were cutting chicken, etc. Later on tonight, I will sharpen my blade.
Good challenge!!! -

State Knife Laws. I spent quite a while today looking up the laws about knives in my state. It took some time to find a site I thot was reliable. Some laws have changed in the last few years…so I wanted to get updated data.
Some can be concealed and some cannot. Some are “illegal/dangerous” but none of mine are in that category. Most of mine are simply hunting/fishing/SAK. Except my “Texas Toothpick” folder….the new favorite of my kitchen, btw. I mentioned the blade is a little longer and that got me wondering. Yep….it’s too long to legally carry concealed in a pocket. But it’s a folder! Hmph!
So I either “open carry” it in a visible belt sheath, or leave it at home. That’s doable but I’m very glad I’m now aware of the legalities. My other heavy lock-back folder in my BOB is exactly legal length for being tucked away. Whew. All my sheath knives must be visible…in sheath, visible on belt or hanging off BOB if I’m not in the woods. If Stuff HitsFan…that will mostly be moot. But until then…..
OldMtWoman….anyone else?

yep, looked up knife laws in FL. Open carry, well just about everything except ballistic which are illegal
Concealed carry, blade no longer than 4 inches, and in a closed position.
But just because you can, doesnt mean that you should. Ya gonna have a fun time explaining to the cops why you are carrying a Samurai sword or machete around, and its no match for a gun. Put your hand on it and you have a good chance of being shot.

September 30, 2019 at 11:59 am #23300
So just folder knives are legal concealed for you? We can conceal within a certain blade length but that would be a short fixed blade knife. Others must carry in sheath …on belt. Can do but rather not unless I’m camping.
Knowing these laws affects some of my BOB packing if it would be leaving my vehicle ‘in town’. OK in home/vehicle/your own place of business. I have one folder that’s ok if “blade length” is only sharpened part…not the whole folder blade metal. Technicalities!
Agreed on Samurai sword tho I saw a question from a chef who brings his own knives on city transportation. Can argue “intent” tho.

You can open carry any knife.
Box cutters, multi-tools, and other work knives are legal to carry concealed.
In most cases, conceal carry of a common pocket knife with a blade of less than 4 inches is legal.
Concealed carry of nearly any knife is not allowed without a permit if the blade is over 4″ in lengthFolder knives to be on the safe side, because they really arent weapons. Basic Florida law is you cant have weapons concealed.
And its up to the courts. If you are out fishing and have a long knife in your pack, well that probably would be ok. Going to a party with a bunch of thugs….well you are busted.
Quoting from MD Creakmore
Sate statute number 790.01 defines a weapon to be “any dirk, knife, metallic knuckles, slingshot, billie club, tear gas gun, chemical weapon or device, or other deadly weapons except a firearm or a common pocketknife, plastic knife, or blunt-bladed table knife.”Now what is a “common pocket knife, thats pretty much up to the courts.

Yeah, lot of “intent” in our state for those grey areas. Things like Swiss Army Knife [SAK] are not “knives” in the legal sense. Thank goodness. But vast differences between states or even cities sometimes. Our state shortened the allowed blade length….which is what puts my hefty folder into a KNIFE category…..maybe. Hmph. Wish ours was 4″ !!
I found a site produced by a legal office ….who evidentally defends such cases. Good data with recent updates accounted for and exact place to find in “the books”.
In some comments, folks say: “Well a cop told me this…” Sorry, but their data is only a good as their memory. No one has perfect memory so it’s best to make sure the data is really in the state statutes. I made sure to copy/paste that whole page so I don’t rely on MY memory! Another thing in my ” To Print” file.

Day 23 Use the pepper knife.
Well, the Survival Knife DH carries is not one I would use. It is sharp on both sides. The Buck knife, however, I have used and it works just fine.
The knife I have stored in the cooking box is just a large kitchen knife and I use that sized one in the kitchen on a regular basis. After it is sharpened it is easy to cut through onions and tomatoes.
I will NOT use the hatchet for chopping wood. I would whack myself on the leg – I have poor depth perception and coordination. I will NOT use the chain saw either. I would use the folding saw, that becomes a triangle, for cutting necessary wood. I know myself well enough that if there is someone else, anyone else, capable of using those other tools it is their job.
