Last year, Daisy offered up a challenge for us to not go to the grocery story for a month, living only off our pantries. I was thinking about that this morning, because I’d like to do it again this January (challenge or not!). Then I got to thinking: I don’t spend much money on a daily basis, but I do need to put gas in the car and do stuff like that, and I usually end up with points from various things and get gift cards during the year that I use for Christmas or whatever, but what if we did a don’t-touch-the-paycheck challenge to support the pantry challenge? I wouldn’t be able to include my mortgage or utilities this year, but that would be a nice goal to aim toward for Jan 2020. Imagine a whole month without spending anything in your bank account! I’m sure Daisy could smooth this out and make it a little more sensible, but I’m curious to see if anyone else is interested in participating in something like this? I don’t mean take money out of savings, but save an ADDITIONAL amount, or pay enough ahead monthly, or use gift cards or whatever, to be able to not touch any pay for a month. What do y’all think?

Just curious, but what’s the point, exactly?

I’m sure others gain different insights during this challenge, but to me the point is to look at my pantry preps and see where my strengths and weaknesses lie. It helps me focus on not only what I may need but also how to be creative with what I have. Adding in the money part may help participants realize not only where money goes (sometimes without thinking) but also pay attention to what is truly needed rather than just dropping a dollar whenever. I know most of us budget anyway, but this would be an extra squeeze for a month. Think of it as an austerity test.

We’re definitely going to run a stockpile challenge in January. The no-spend could be a cool additional challenge for those who are in!

I’m always up for a challenge. Â My husband mocks my frugality. Â Can’t wait to tell him about this one.

James Mitchner, I can tell you that last year I learned in the pantry challenge that my daughter doesn’t like beans and rice or pasta nearly as much as a vegetarian should! Challenging a 15yo doesn’t always get the results one would expect. Or want.

Good way to learn how many ways you can cook pasta/rice/etc. and not get food bored.
May sound trivial, but for those who plan on eating nothing but MREs for a month or longer, you will find out.
