    Well some personal observations:

     

    When my eldest was inducted into the National Honor Society, there were zero obese kids up there. Most of the kids were (are cross country) runners.

    And the XC kids are some of the most well behaved and polite kids you could run across.

    Personally I think it is a mix of lethargy, eating highly processed food stuff, and lack of not only exercise, but of interaction with the outside environment.

    Does not have to be kids either.  When I visit my parents in FL, there does  seem to be a difference between retirees who remain active vs those who dont.
