Government employees are simply a few rungs on the ladder above the common citizen. They enjoy extra privileges. It always rubs me the wrong way when some government employee does wrong or is under some sort of investigation and they won’t release the name because they say its a “personnel matter”. Hey, ya know.. those people work for us and we pay their salaries, we deserve to know who they are!
Local police were involved in a shooting several months ago where one of them got wounded. They wouldn’t release the name of the wounded cop and haven’t to this day.

There are good reasons not to release the identity of the officer(s) involved in a shooting.
What happened to Darren Wilson after Michael Brown was shot?
He was in the right, but he lost his home, job, his life will never be the same. Lies, damned lies and politics conspired to ruin a good man.
If no one knew who he was until after the investigation was complete, do you think that things in Ferguson would be different? For Wilson at least they would be.
Part two, with the availability of information online today, how fast can friends of the suspect find the Officers home with nefarious intent?
Back when I had a badge, I had people coming to my home in the middle of my “night”, waking me to find out where their car/keys/etc were. And that’s without broadcasting where I lived.
Think about some irate customers of yours showing up at your house outside of working hours? I had three MS13 wannabes walk into my garage after I was let go, because I wasn’t a “cop anymore”.
The officers in question are having to deal with taking a life, thats not why they got into the job. Its not like wartime but someone you pass on the street, your kids go to school together, your wives see each other at the hairdressers.
You are now a murderer in the eyes of many. Something to think about.

Wouldn’t that also be a risk for releasing a citizen’s name in an investigation and/or prosecution of a criminal? I’m not aware of an prohibitions of doing that, are you? Is the citizen’s life not as valuable as the cop’s? I think that the facts would bare out that the citizen identified is in MORE danger.

Hmmm just like accused rapist, she recant a total lie and guess who has that title forever with no recourse.
You can choose not to be a public servant you cant choose not to be a victim. All you can do is limit chances of victimization.
Using this to avoid responsibility will further erode public trust of police and will have more negative impacts.

There are two sides to this and I can see both. Police suicides are up. Its a job I wouldn’t want. I have to say the officers in my town are pretty nice people in my experience.

I agree there are two sides to this. We are not a country of guilty before proven otherwise. It’s the other way around. So to me if a cop has to shoot someone even though it was self defence. If his name were to be released before the facts were out and the cop was in the right, his life and the life of his family are toast. They would come after him and his family. The fact of the matter is that the hate in this country has gotten way out of line. We have been lied to by the media so much, we no longer know what is truth any longer. Look at this boarder wall situation. Pilose will not care what happens to the citizens of this country. All they care about is who wallet will get the fattest. And that includes the Reps. as well. We do have a drug problem in this country, we do have ms13 and the terrest are in every state just waiting for the right time to bring this country down. I you can bet Soros is behind a lot of what has been going on at the border. He is the problem and our police officers have to deal with this on a daily bases. So I really don’t think their names should be released till all the effadence is in. The family of the police officer needs to be protected at all levels. There was a police officer killed by an illegal after Christmas. So yes something needs to be done. and I am done ranting on this now. It just makes me mad to know where this country is heading.

so let’s put this in perspective Brett Kavanaugh supreme court judge applicant, falsely accused, gets zero protection but a beat cop who shoots someone does because it might have blow back? You really think this victim law is to shield cops in doing thier duties because they are a victim yet are totally ok with false accusation outing of potential judge candidate. So where do regular folk stand? How many lives ruined by false accusations?
The law was designed to stop revictimization of people who had been already victimized, by publishing thier names.
In cases where potential wrong doing in civic matter a mayor doing some shady business will now be shielded under the same way the police want to use the law. Imagine what a great tool this will be for transparency and accountability if everyone can play victim card.
