Oh, boy. The Pope has chimed in.
So, from what I am understanding, carbon pricing or carbon taxes are taxes on the end product the consumer has to pay for. The carbon inputs to make/grow that product, the carbon inputs it takes to ship the product from its source to the end destination. Then there is the disposal tax if it is a non-biodegradable product like a old washer machine. Or even recycling that washing machine will require a tax to ship it to the recycle center and the carbon inputs to recycle it.
Thing is, that is the best way to end globalization.
Does not matter if the cost of labor is low in China, all that carbon tax will add up and your iPhone will be not $800, but $3-4k (note, China is the final destination for assembly of an iPhone. Various components come from other countries like Germany, Japan, the Philippians, with a few parts coming from China itself).
Could actually promote local, domestic production of goods and food aka jobs.
Sorry Millennials, if you want that avocado toast it might cost you $80. Your latte might be $23. Right along with your $4k iPhone.
Hey, if it ends globalization and brings back jobs, I just might be able to get behind this idea.
I dont need avocado toast, lattes, or an iPhone.
Did you hear that? A Millennial’s head just exploded.
