Power Company Seizes Control of Thermostats in Colorado During Heatwave

I’ve never trusted smart thermostats – or any smart appliance – thinking that just this sort of thing would happen.  I also think what happened in Denver is a trial balloon.  If they get away with it with little outcry, then they’ll do more control.

The government has no business telling me what temperature my house should be, what kind of light bulb I use, how strong my shower head is or what kind of car I drive.  None.

Ah They signed up for the Colorado AC rewards program, which apparently allows them to do that. We have something similar here in Florida.

FPL says that:
When you enroll your qualifying central electric air conditioner (A/C) and central electric heater, we can turn off your A/C for up to three hours per day in the summer (April – October) and your heater for up to three hours per day in the winter (November – March). and if you wish

With optional appliances, you can save even more! You can also enroll your conventional electric water heater and single-speed pool pump that can be switched off for up to four hours per day.

Last month our electric bill was by far the highest it has ever been.  Just got the new one today.  It’s $130.00 higher than last month.
