Hi friends. Poop. What a time for the total crash. We’d just persuaded family to move to a homestead lifestyle a few months ago ` – husband and I have had small homestead experience for 20 years, but 2 years ago moved close to new grandchild, not really a homestead area (SoCals desert). Then, doncha know, boom. Lockdown.
I won’t bore you with detail, but we’re looking at a place to go to re-establish a small homestead. For our needs and purposes, NC south of Asheville is number one at the moment.
If anyone would like to offer other locations as a possibility, feel free.
I pray you are all well +

@cath,
Asheville NC is very nice.
But it is a bit expensive.
Not far from there is Cullowhee NC. I took my NOLS Wilderness EMT course there.
A bit more rural, less expensive.
The area of far West SC, Greenville, is also nice too.Could you be a bit more specific to what you are looking for? Rural, urban, needs of a hospital or other healthcare facilities etc.

Maine , yes the winters can suck , but abundant natural resources . Depending on your political. leanings , I found NC to be a little too left for me .

Ouch.
There are no good relocation locations each has its own issues.
In hindsight, we should have found a better place. But at the time, it was the best option.
A better question, where are you going to be in 10 years and go from there. I certainly didn’t expect to be out of my chosen profession or restarting businesses a decade later.
Follow the money, or follow the retirement.
I can’t do what I used to do, it makes me look towards the future and what I need to work against.A sad thing, we lost several of our “elders” a while back, and while we didn’t lose them physically, we lost them “digitally”, perhaps even worse.as they aren’t helping us down the “path”.

The wife and I hope to move to Wyoming and become more self sufficient in the next few years. If this whole thing doesn’t get worse / long term. We are in PA right now, I need two more years to get the numbers I need to leave my job. I’ll still need another job but we’ll be able to go.

I so appreciate your replies and please excuse my inability to respond/thank you until now.
Since my husband and I are semi qualified peppers (reading/research/collecting books/following protocol) for many years, we’re comfortable with identifying general SW area outside of Asheville. I identified Asheville more as a map pin, but will be more SW area. It is also reputed (hopefully still so) as an area of seasoned preppers. We are concerned to be in an general area of community of like minded, even if not next door, but close enough.
I say we’re semi qualified because we’ve lived a small homestead life, purposefully somewhat off grid by using fireplace to heat home – which entailed firewood and chopping! – a garden that yielded enough to eat, fruit trees and bushes, proximity to 2 lakes, etc. We felt it was preparation for this….not knowing when “this” would happen. Then 2 years ago we answered the call of our children to participate in gchild life since we were in Canada and they are in US. We sold and moved here (SoCal desert ugh) and are ‘halfway prepped’, started over w prepping. But as a family we realize this isn’t the best place to be. Heck if we lose elec and water we’re in deep doo doo.
Right now I’m worried about how to quickly do this too. I’m convinced that within 6 months things will be very dire and moving may not be possible.
Thank you for listening, friends.

No worries Cath!
Great background story!
Yeah, I too would get out of CA and fast.
The thing I am seeing, in MSM at least, is the presumption that we are almost on the other side! And then all will go back to normal!
Ah, no. This is just the beginning.
It will be adjusting to the new normal that will be interesting to see. And what that will look like. -

Amen to that CB. I said last night to spouse that the surreal nature of what we’re living through is not necessarily the lockdown and ripple effect, but how most people STILL think we’re all going back to pre lockdown days. You and I and most others of our mindset knew immediately that this is an event that will permanently change every aspect of the fake life “they” gave us.
Update/long story short, a move will be happening, but not as quickly as I’d like. So I’m redirecting efforts to finish prepping in place until we do. Expending $ on infrastructure that can move with us.
Peace to you all, friends.
