The storm that hit the west cost is heading our way.  According to the radio, the Mid-west has already seen it.  It is heading our way starting this evening.

I am going to bring in a few extra loads of wood.  Filling extra water containers, bladders now.  Will give all the livestock some extra hay.  Checking batteries, candles, camp stove that kind of thing.  Pre-staging the cold weather gear, which is not hard as I already used it once this year.

    Anyone else prepping for it?

We are missing the snow.  Its passing north of us.  But tomorrow night (Sunday) the temp drops into the mid-teens with high gusting winds.  One report is gusts up to 55mph and wind chills in the single-digits.  We are so saturated here from months of rain that I feel sure we’ll loose power yet again.  I’ve never witness a sustained weather pattern like we have experienced over the past ten months.  One or two days of sun, often with gusting winds, and then four or five days of gloom with rain, sleet, snow… whatever for the particular season.  Really hampered planting last spring and likely will again.  I’ll be checking out the generators tomorrow and seeing to the wood stove.   It may be the only heat we’ll have.

I brought in extra wood and such because we were supposed to get a storm Friday nothing happened except wind, now its supposed to get us Monday. They have been wrong almost all winter here.

We are expected to get -10 temps and -30 with the windchill.  That is will kill livestock outside!

I got the heavy wool socks, long underware, snow pants, military artic parka, wool Balaclava, snow shoes, gloves at the ready.

    Everyone!  Please be safe!

Yes, I am prepping for this winter storm. Its actually just double-checking my lists to make sure all is still up to speed.

At the beginning of the winter season, I do the big get ready and then every storm I just do a few things on my checklist, like check amount of firewood, fuel in snowblower, ice melt (now I just use my wood ash), and position lanterns/flashlights.

The big thing is going to the dump. Most in my area are ready food wise, so the grocery store is not mobbed. Instead, the dump is mobbed as everyone gets rid of their trash and recyclables. It becomes a social event. People here in the North Country are very polite about it all.

Our forecast is for 14-18 inches. Being in the higher elevations means I usually get double that amount, so I am expecting up yo 3 feet. It also means I should expect a power outage.

Accordingly, I carry a pair of snowshoes in my SUV. I have worked on my snowshoeing and skiing.

I am off to enjoy the snow 🙂

I just wanted to add that is a non-stress event as I am prepared. I don’t care if we get slammed with 4 feet of snow and the power goes out for weeks. I am ready and that’s a good feeling.

We got about 3 inches of snow. The roads are ok, but the temperatures have dropped into the single digits.

We have a good amount of food at home, and I am buying more soon.  My car has an extra coat and scarf, and now I need to add an extra pair of gloves.

How do you store water in your car this time of year without the water freezing?  Yes, it froze in my water bottle today.

Up here in the frozen north we are prepared for storms most all the time.  We check a few things though and always have very warm clothing.  I like that I am retired and can stay off the roads when its really bad.

Most people keep a full pantry in winter as the grocery store isn’t that convenient to get to in a storm.  We are just used to it.  We don’t usually have ice storms here to make the power go out because its usually too cold.  Even so the power can go out for a while.

I have been out doing some mid-storm clean. My area is at about 16-20 inches with more snow falling. Weather forecast is for another 6-9, which in my higher elevation means 12-18 inches for around 3 feet total.

I am staggering my exposure as it is getting colder and windy. We are forecast for -10 getting down to -19 with wind chills forecast at 35 to 40 below. I have donned multiple layers. I am limiting myself to 15 minutes outside and as the temperature is dropping even less.

@redcarnation. I would add a hat, boots, and extra socks to your car preps. Regarding water, I take a bag of extra supplies with me whenever it is this cold. Use a cooler bag as it will help keep it from freezing. I also use a thermos.

@woodsrunner. My area is a heavily forested area. I live in a huge state park where a lot of the land is kept in a natural state. With this heavy snow and winds, I expect to lose power and plan for it. No rush on the grocery store as most of the locals are prepared. The big rush was yesterday at the dump (no trash pickup here).

@crowbar. Take care of your lifestock and stay safe!

I let the water drip last night because it was so cold.  Should have let it drip today too because it froze.  I got it going with a hair dryer tho.  I drove to church this morning but weather was nasty.  Most of the worst of it hit south of us I think.  Now I am staying home and tomorrow I’ll blow it out.  power stayed on.

Loving Life….I remember many storms like that.  Haven’t had one with more than 2 and half feet up here.  We had to manually shovel the long driveway that time.  Now our snowplow friend makes sure he comes several times during a big dump of snow.  Threeeee feeeet?  Oye, now that’s just getting ridiculous!  LOL  You be very careful, please.  Do you have phone service and rescue folks on snowmobiles?  JIC?

We’ve got snow coming but in inches, not feet.  Well, if I measure all of the inches just this month…I will reach ‘fee’t already.  Good thing we do melt rather quickly out here in the west.  But turning that to ice is worse.

We’re prepping the animals with as much as can be positioned for Point Of Use.  Water and old horse’s extra senior feed cannot be.  We try to set up for as few steps as possible.  But I would give a lot to be able to go back and tell our former selves 20 yrs ago…..Nooooo, don’t put the barn there…needs to be near the lane for unloading hay!  Don’t put the gate/path UNDER the 8foot icicles!   [We didn’t KNOW 8′ icicles would form on the house then]  So much we know now…

OldMtWoman ….make good choices during this mess, y’all.

I wrote a nice long post. Right when I sent it, the power went out for 15 minutes!
I will do a couple short posts.

I ended up with about 30 inches here in the higher elevations. Lol. It has been wicked cold. I woke to -19 and -43 with wind chill. The high today is forecast -11 with -34 wind chill. The wind is a screaming here. I already lost at least one big tree so far.

The winter scene is quite beautiful with the white mounds of snow and the wind swirling all the snow, my own mini snowglobe with my house in the middle. I am safe cuddled with the dogs in front of my raging fire. I have the wood stove about as hot as she will go!

@woodsrunner. Sorry to hear about the frozen pipes. That’s always a worry with the frigid temps. Power has been in and out here. Stay safe and warm.

@oldmtwoman. My contractor had to plow my driveway three times so far. Each winter, I have at least one storm that is over 3 feet and so bad that we have to bring in a front loader. I have the snow shoes all ready in front of the door just in case. The worst is the frigid cold. I knew this was coming so I got everything shovelled out yesterday. The -45 wind chill is so biting! You can feel it in your bones.

I had one tree go down so far, but I won’t deal with it until later. Instant firewood!

Well that makes another 6″ since @7am. Supposed to get another 12 hours of snow.

The yard is between two and three feet depending upon where you measure.

The funny part, everything is open except for the highways over in Utah, its just a mess. Not that they know how to drive when the weather is good, but Provo canyon had a slide that put 30′ of snow on the highway.

And yes that was thirty feet of snow.

@whirlibird. I commiserate with you. I have sections of the property that are 30 inches and others that are probably 40 inches. That’s why I stick to that paths. The wind has really gone a number. If you didn’t know where you were going you would be chest high in snow or worse.

This snow is not for the newbies. They ask why I have my snow shoes and skis in the car (along with a back pack to carry everything).

    Stay safe and warm!

@lovinglife – Thank you!  I added the hat and socks.  Boots I always wear when I leave the house in cold weather.

A thermos with hot/warm water is a great idea.  It can be another way to stay warm if needed.

Glad to hear from y’all in the affected areas.  No….that much snow is not for newbies!  A drop of snow on the road …30 Feet.  Avalanche!  Hope no cars buried.  Our area is snowing but nothing like that.  The ice from melting is more dangerous cuz the new snow covers it and zzzzzip!  I’m trying to take note of such hidden traps and rough up the surface as it’s freezing.

OldMtWoman ….life was a lot easier last week.
