Not so sure I would agree with everything the author says, but there are a few points I agree.
A thicker blade.
I tend to KA-Bar Becker line of knives. I have several of them. Funny enough, the ones that get the most use are not the “tactical” knives, but the Machax (faux ax) which is like a cross between a ax and a machete. Came with a great sheath, that is functional and comfortable. The other is the Becker Tac Tool. It is made for extraction in emergency events. Not crazy about the sheath on it.
I must admit, I do have a Becker Combat Bowie knife. Practical? Not really. But it just put a big ol grin on my face.
One thing traditional KA-Bars have is the pommel for those times when you really need to hammer something in and a hammer or rock is not available. There might be a few better knives out there, but some lack in quality. Others will cost well into $100+. I would really kick my own arse if I lost one of those. And then chide myself for buying it in the first place.

KeymasterTo add: I also have a Ontario Knives SPAX (Special Purpose Ax), from my volunteer fire fighter days.
Tactical?
No.
Practical for fire fighting or as a camp ax?
Absolutely.
Pare it with the Becker Tac Tool, good kit. -

ParticipantCold Steel , GI Tanto . Dirt simple , dirt cheap , 1095 carbon . Cross between a stabber and a cleaver . Great for out in the woods , and for what you pay for it , you wont be afraid to abuse it . Do your worst , it can take it , like a sharp pry bar .

I like all kinds of blades. Believe it or not that Bear Grylis knife is a good one. It stays in my go bag. It’s performed a lot of camp tasks and skinned and processed probably 20 or more deer.
Main thing is to actually have one on you -

ParticipantI have had a stupid number of knives over the years.
In the end I have come to prefer the thinner blades, and the Ka-Bar is good but the Cattaraugus Q-225 “Quartermaster” knife is better. Same vintage. The Q knife was designed because the Marines kept breaking the Ka-Bars.
Of the modern blades, in the thick category, the Cold Steel SRK and the Gerber LMT are two on the short list.
In the thin category, the Benchmade Nimvramus is probably the winner in the modern category.
