It is March!
It is warmer here, almost feels like spring.
Heard song birds that have returned yesterday.
March 1, 2021 at 12:18 pm #34074
March came in here like a Lion, severe storms then colder with more rain today.
Going out Tuesday to take some deer to the meat processing place to have it made into smoked sausage and ground meat, so thankful these deer were given to us, will sure help in preparing with extra food.
Guess I got lazy and let us run out of out of homemade Jalapeno jelly and Blueberry jam so will go by the store when out Tuesday and pick up the things needed to make more.
The order for flour and oatmeal came in and are in the freezer for a few weeks then I will repackage it into gallon size vacuum sealer bags and store in freezer. I do have Mylar bags but I don’t like how the flour taste after being stored in them.
DH is really tired, stressed and having anxiety after dealing with problems this freeze caused, plus his blood sugar level is up these past few days. It worries me for we have no more 911 paramedic help here since it closed down a few months ago.
Going to try and do one thing each month to become better prepared, so if you’ll have any advice or suggestions they would be most welcome by me.
March 1, 2021 at 8:55 pm #34084
First, I want to thank everyone for the prayers for DH. Though he passed on Valentines day, he is very much missed. I am holding my own with good days and bad days. But working through it.
I am at a crossroads right now as to how I am going to prepare for whatever comes our way. Right now it is hard to even think about a possibility of war with China or anything else or even an EMP at this point. I am just getting back into going through things to either sell or give to the grandkids if they want any of the Knickknacks that I have. I need to start downsizing the house as I am looking into the possibility of selling out and moving to another state. VA is getting bad in more ways than one. Just over a month ago my SIL got promoted and DD and he moved to North Carolina. My one granddaughter that is still here will be moving to S. Carolina for medical school sometime next year. That leaves me with no family if I stay here that is very close by. So a lot of future decisions to make. Not going to worry about that for a few months though. Downsizing comes first.
Not sure about a garden yet this year as the rain just won’t let up. Spring is coming in like a lamb and may go out like a lion. We have lost a garden before because of this type of weather. So I am looking into just doing some container gardening this year. At least if we have to much rain, I can move buckets into garage for a bit so they don’t get to wet.
grannyj Smith, I have several pounds of flour that I have pulled out of freezer and was going to put into Mylar bags. Does the bags give the flour a metallic taste? If so I might just use my canning jars and seal them that way. I will need to buy some more of the 1/2 gal. jars for that though.
Will be keeping your DH in prayer for his diabetics and for things to calm down for him. Things have been very stressful for so many. I think both last year and this year will be something no one will forget for many, many years to come.
March 2, 2021 at 8:33 am #34090
Littlesister, I stored flour and rice in Mylar bags a couple years ago and vacuum sealed them with those little things that take the air out and I just did not like the how it made the flour and rice taste old. I like to keep things as fresh as I can and using vacuum sealer bags and the freezer works better for me. I do use Mylar bags to store dry beans in and maybe I did something wrong with storing the flour and rice in Mylar bags.
March 2, 2021 at 9:34 pm #34100
Glad to know grannyj, though I have done my rice in the Mylar bags and didn’t taste any different than if I put in freezer or canning jars. But the flour could be a bit different. Might check my jars as I think I only have about 3- 1/2 jars left and will need a lot more for the flour. My freezer is to full to put it back in freezer. So I need to get the meat in there canned but just am not in the mood to can anything right now. Just can’t seem to be able to get myself into a routine right now. So much to do and most if it right now is taxes and other things to take care of. Figure I will worry about the canning and garden after that is over. Seems for the past year with taken care of Dh and just letting everything else go, that I just can’t get myself back into wanting to do things right now other than what I have to do. It will take time but I will get there.
March 5, 2021 at 5:04 pm #34161Cinnamon GrammyParticipant
Don’t rush. Your routine for the past year has been broken and you need a rest. Move when you have the energy and sit when you don’t. Your brain/body has lost its partner and you need to recalibrate. It takes time. So, take the time. Hugs to you.
March 5, 2021 at 7:13 pm #34163
You are right about the brain and body needing to recalibrate. It has not been easy with trying to get all this paperwork out of the way. I did get the taxes done and the paperwork filled out and sent back for the insurance.. I have no money coming in for March other than Social Security. But I have enough to pay the bills and anything else that might come up. Went through a lot of our emergency money having to get things for Dh that was needed. The ramp included. But it was all tax deductible and that was good. Just hope it helps me to get more money back this year..
Just got back from granddaughter’s apartment as we decided to have dinner every Friday. She cooked today and I will be cooking next Friday. At least that will start me getting back out of the house again.
I still wake up during the night a lot as I was doing that when Dh needed help in middle of night. I think I have gotten so used to it, that it will take some time to sleep through the night again. Nights are the worst for me right now. I am debating getting back to church either this Sunday or next Sunday. Just not ready for a lot of people yet. That to will take some time. Still not able to go through Dh’s things and get them packed away. That will come when I am ready. But right now is just to soon.
Trying to catch up on the house work and start the spring cleaning I never got to finish from last spring. That is enough to keep me busy as everything has gotten behind. But if I had it to do all over again, I would just take care of Dh and let the house go again. He was more important.
March 9, 2021 at 3:20 pm #34252
It is 70* outside today. So turned off the heat and opened windows today. Hoping and praying that will help me to get through these hard times right now. It is beautiful outside and yes the weeds are growing. So went out and pulled a few weeds and moved an old iron table and chairs from the patio to under a tree near where the garden was. I can sit under that tree and shell butterbeans and chuck corn right there at that table. Still need to finish power washing the patio down. what a mess that is. Cement is nasty and really needs a good cleaning. Have been trying to stay as busy as I can to keep my mind off of things. Paperwork is still on going and will be for a while, but there is a light at the end of that tunnel on that. I think after about a another week or two that part should be behind me. The market is saving me some 5 gal. buckets as I think I am only going to do container garden this year. I don’t think I am ready to do the bigger garden as that is something Dh and I did together and right now just thinking about that upsets me. So maybe next year I will start the bigger garden again. I can picture him out there now plowing the garden up. He loved planting a garden every year and then helping me to get it all canned.
March 10, 2021 at 2:04 pm #34275
DH picked up the deer meat this morning and it’s enough to last a few months. Got the bulk order of steel cut oatmeal in smaller vacuum bags in the freezer along with the orders of wheat and all purpose flour, have enough bread flour I will not need any for a few months. I pray we don’t have anymore extended power outages hit our area.
The order of banana breads are picked up so I have a little more freezer room in one freezer, but I need a break to rest and get organized.
Have any of you taken the vaccine shot for Covid and how did you do after the shot, dh wants me to get the shots is why I ask.

Haven’t taken the shot. I’ve got family who has. So far no reactions outside of normal soreness or slight fever.
Haven’t had a need to double tap anyone in the zombie head yet lol.
March 10, 2021 at 4:32 pm #34278
My parents did.
First shot went okay, no worries
The second, dad went down hard for about 2 days.
March 10, 2021 at 5:59 pm #34284
My parents did also, mid 80’s. Moderna with no problems.

Had a better day today. Cooked dinner for granddaughter and her boyfriend. Then they put a microwave stand together for me. So that project is done. Got the small oven that I use for everything off counter and on the microwave stand now. So I now have more counter space. Either my soon to be grandson in law was hungry or he really loved the baked ziti with sausage I made. He went back for seconds and took some home. Next Friday is my granddaughter’s turn to cook. So I will go to her house. We are taken turns cooking every other Friday. It’s going to turn out to be fun. We are all enjoying it.
Nights are still an issue for me as I still cannot sleep through the night. So I am up and down quite a bit. Guess it will just take some time to get back to a normal sleep pattern. But it will take some time. Still haven’t gone through Dh’s clothes and things to put away. My daughter and I are going to make a memory quilt from his tee shirts and things. I would really like that. I told her that we could use his shirts with the fish and the star wars ones and then patch in his Grinch shirt in the middle. She bought him that shirt as he would always say bah hum bug on Christmas and the Grinch was one of his favorite shows. We are going to do lap quilts and hope to have enough to make at least 5 quilts. Will see how far his shirts will go.

Well, we have one more night of single digit temps in the forecast, then it warms up.
March 15, 2021 at 10:35 am #34404
Its outdoor work season here. Have about another month before things get really hot humid and difficult to do things outside.
The local government got crazy. A sting operation of sorts nailing people for having weeds in their yard and “too many” cars.

I like having 4 seasons, I like winter too, but it is usually around the end of Feb, or the beginning of Mar that I am ready for spring.
March 16, 2021 at 2:06 pm #34429
My days are getting somewhat better. I slept all the way through the night now two days in a row. Went back to Church for the first time in a year this past Sunday then went to the cemetery. Still having to sit in our cars but he is working on getting the church open by Easter. Granddaughter is coming in from Washington state tomorrow. So had to go to store to pick up some things she likes to snack on. I have no snack foods around here. Need to get back into baking again other than bread. We will be going to my other granddaughter’s tomorrow for dinner.
Got one of the bookcases cleaned out and ready to move it to the living room. Then will get the other one cleaned out and into the living room. One on each side of the door. Then I can get my books back in it so I can find what I am looking for again. Trying to empty out the office and turn it back into a bedroom. Slow coming as I am trying to go through so much stuff to get rid of. Still haven’t packed up Dh’s clothes. I want to go through the shirts and make a memory quilt. Hoping there will be enough for more than one. I think I could get maybe 3 of them, but not sure yet. Then with the way the country is going, should I pack what I don’t use for quilts and keep or donate them. Don’t think any of the men in my family can wear many of Dh’s clothes as they will either be to small or to big for them. The 2 suits he has I will donate. Just don’t know what I should keep and what I need to let go yet. I think the economy is playing into the what if’s right now. I am going to keep some of his white tee shirts for me to wear. Being white, they can be bleached and I can wear those for working in garden and when I am bleaching down the shower, etc. Won’t have to worry about a bleach spatter.
I want to get those flimsy wire shelving units out of the closet in office and replace them with wooden shelving. Just wondering if that is something I can do myself. Something I need to look at.
March 17, 2021 at 9:31 am #34567
Washing machines are overrated.
My super expensive Maytag broke. Since I have family in the area, 5 gallon buckets and a roof that needs replacing I decided to forgo the repair/replacement for now.
So a 5 gallon bucket with a brush. Warm water courtesy of the sun.
Its not bad at all.
So far, I dont have dishwasher, electric dryer and now a washer. And what I thought initially would be catastrophic in my “1st world, NEED to have these modern conveniences”, turned out to be just a change in a way to do things.
March 24, 2021 at 2:24 pm #34772
DH keeps complaining that the electric coffe maker doesn’t keep his coffee hot enough so I am ordering him a stove top percolator and it states coffee taste better in this one, but I still like using some small electric appliances. I need to find a larger cast iron griddle for I will be making pancakes for more kid’s breakfast after the move and pancakes just don’t taste as good unless made on a cast iron griddle.
Started using my Instant Pot more and really like how fast it cooks dried beans and soup, have not tried it for oatmeal or meats until I get more comfortable with it.
Made some homemade dusting spay and found it works as well as commerical dusting spray so I may add some tea tree essential for the other house, maybe it will also sanitize as I dust. Decided I going to need a pressure washer and some mold remover for the other house for it would take me forever to wash and clean the outside of that house.
Going shopping next week for towels, bed sheets and Easter things for the kids, really looking forward to going out, it has been awhile since I have shopped, other than hurrying in and out of the grocery store.
Well that is all my boring news.

Looks like things have been very slow on here for a long while. I am still hanging in there. Post office lost my taxes that was mailed to the CPA by certified mail on March 4th. Was supposed to have been delivered on the 8th. So I had been going round and round with them. They found them and the CPA got them yesterday. Taxes could have been done and over with by now. Just can’t trust the post office for anything now.
Still going through a lot of things and debating about some of the food I have going to my church for food ministry. Way to much for one person now. Still have not gone through Dh’s clothes and packed them away for the memory quilts for when I have more time to make them. Also JoAnn fabrics is having a 50% off sale on flannel and I need to go there as I would like to get some things that I will need for the quilts. I have 2 of DH’s belts that have fish on them. They are made of rope. Trying to decide how I can use those for something for grandson. As belts they are to big for him. but thinking of some sort of craft idea for them.
Still have good days and bad days, but working through it. I need to get the container garden going, so need to head out to the feed and seed and also hope they have some more of the 1/2 gal. canning jars. Might do that either tomorrow or day after.
Namelus that picture is pretty and glad it wasn’t me that got that snow. I like snow but not if I have to go anywhere in it. Not able to shovel snow off walkway and driveway either.
Kids coming in this weekend. Will be hear Friday night and heading back on Sat. They are going to empty a shed they are renting now that they are in the new house. Hoping they take the fish and fish tank back with them. Can’t get to the fireplace because it is sitting right in front of it on the stoop. They have stuff all over my house and in garage that need to go so I can get to things. Once that is gone, I am hoping to get a lot of things done.
Grandson is going to Washington state to live with his oldest sister for a while. Hope and pray it all works out and he gets his act together. He was going into the military but backed out at the last minute. Said it just wasn’t for him and his mother was pressuring him to go in. So he needs to make up his mind about college if he really wants to be a game designer.
Hope to see you all on here more often but I know with everything going on and time for gardens everyone will be busy.

Hi Everyone. Ugh….2021 has been personally ROUGH…and still is. I can’t believe it’s been so long since I’ve been here! I’ll take some time to read back over what I’ve missed. I feel like I’ve been playing catch-up on life in general. Many current stressors.
Would you believe, due to the issues, I STILL have BOB items [separated into multiple categories] awaiting final decisions? The BOB Vest is done….minor modifications still possible. Attempts at adding a LIGHT-WEIGHT bag to the BOB ‘kit’ ….that’s where I meet the brick wall of……not able to carry much and still want my STUFF. LOL I’m hopeless. But still trying for best solution. 🙂
OldMtWoman ….checking in for March!

Namelus….that pic looks like our area. In 2021 we have collected FEET of snow. Not all at once but …tho it is melting, we’re covered! Still falling off the pine trees from the last bit. Not even thinking of springtime yet at our high altitudes.
Corsaire…. I agree with your assessment that we really CAN do without a lot of ‘normal’ appliances. But…I do love my washer….for the spin cycle, if nothing else. I have weakness and trying to wring out clothes would be very hard. But I have washed many things in a 5 gal bucket and DEDICATED-LAUNDRY-ONLY toilet plunger. [Get a durable plunger!] Set it inside shower stall and to keep the sloshing inside the curtain.
Grannyj…..my DH is doing nearly all the cooking now. He has also used the Instant Pot more and more. It has all those varied functions and we have such a tiny kitchen space. We have only cast iron fry pans which get used multiple times daily as well. You’re right about them making real pancakes!!
Lil’Sis…..praying for your adaption to your current life. Hope you can enjoy garden work and organizing your home.

We were blessed and protected last evening when storms that produced a large tornado that stayed on the ground for eighty six miles, it started a few miles from us and moved up to the North missing us. More severe weather for Tuesday & Wednesday with tornadic weather, March came in like a lion and continues to roar all through the South with these deadly tornadoes.
We were suppose to go to the city to work on a shed and fence it so the chickens will have a safe place when we move them, but the weather was so bad we did not go.
My first batch of Blueberry jam turned out not so good, so I am doing another batch and this time not adding so much sugar. I hope I get a chance to make some different kinds of jam and jellies for next winter and maybe some extra to trade or sell.
I wanted to add six baby chicks to my chickens, but dh say no that the ten chickens we have is enough, no it’s not when we will be feeding extra family members after we move, I worry about food storages, but dh thinks I am over reacting to things I read online. I will bring up getting more baby chicks again when we go to town before they sell out.

I am in the sub-tropics OldMtWoman so my laundry is done outside. The water heats up nicely. Need ironing done? Put the clothes on a hanger. Leave it overnight so the dew will dampen it. The sun the next morning heats it up and viola.

A few days ago i got a short sink plunger with a handle on top. Korky Beehive mini at home depot.

Thank you for the prayers OldMtWoman. It is still a struggle but I am getting there a little each day. Still have my moments, but it is starting to get a little easier each week.
Went to the feed and seed and bought a lot of seeds for garden. Also got tomato plants both Roma and beefsteak. The ones DH liked they didn’t have. No pepper plants. So started those from seed. No cucumber plants either. So both are being done by seeds. Still a bit to cold at night. So haven’t planted yet.
Got the grill parts and cleaned the grill up so SIL can fix it when he comes next weekend. Cleaned up the old Kirby vacuum cleaner that we use in garage. It needs a new bag but it is over 50 years old and I don’t know that I would use it anymore. Will hold on to it for now though just in case I decide to use it. again. Also got the old shop vac cleaned up and ordered a new filter for it. I do use that a lot.
I had ordered 6 cases of canning jars at the beginning of the shortage and had forgotten about it. So over the past month I had been buying the pint wide mouth jars and got about 4 cases of them. Came home from Church and had a box on porch. Got it in house and opened it and it was the 6 cases of canning jars I had ordered. Don’t think I need anymore for a long while. Still have the freezer to can from that I haven’t been able to get to yet. And then when the tomatoes come in later in year, I will have all those to can and to make soups and sauces with. Then I will see how my jars go. As far as I know I won’t be using the quart jars as much as it is only myself now.
Getting things together to give to my DD and SIL. I am looking to buy a small air compressor and giving the monster 220 one that DH made to SIL. It is way more than I need, and it takes up half a wall. Also giving him the push mower as we haven’t used it in 4 years along with all the other yard stuff, blower, trimmer and things. I can’t pull the cords on them. So I can’t use them. Giving him the tiller as well. I have the electric one I can use now. Bought new clothesline cord that I need to get up so I can use the clothesline again. Shouldn’t take to long to restring that.
I am now trying to get out and go places a little each day. I seem to get tired when I go out for to long. Thinking it is because I am not used to getting out any longer and it tires me out more now. I have started walking around the neighborhood again trying to get myself back in shape. Staying home and not getting out has taken more of a toll on me than I thought. It will take time but I will get there. Stayed home for over 3 years as Dh wasn’t able to go out much and I wouldn’t leave him for long when I did go out with the last year not being able to go out both due to Dh’s health and corvid. So It is going to be a long haul trying to get back into shape again. But I will get there.
