    I think if they redefined the poverty rate (and not some political BS way, but a legit way), more Americans would find themselves in a lower economic class then as the current definition.

    Perhaps we have too many staying too long on the welfare rolls? And, what is poverty really? I guess when one has seen true poverty in other countries, it’s hard to say that many Americans are truly impoverished. The poorest of our poor live high on the hog compared to many world wide. I hope my heart has not become too hardened; but I’ve lost the ability to feel compassion for many who demand more and more hand outs because they are “poor” while they sport their mobile phones, tattoos, eat out at fast food places regularly, find money for lotto tickets, feed their drug habit, buy junk food with their food stamp money, etc. Just my opinion of course.

    @muffy,
    I spent a year in Afghanistan.
    Some of those people, now they were dirt poor.
    But, interestingly enough, despite being poor, they seemed a whole lot happier, better adjusted, sense of community then I would say the majority of Americans.
    In ways, they remind me of the Amish.
    They may not have a formal education, but they are far from stupid. Many speak two or more languages.

    Life there could be short and brutal. Hence the sense of community, but in their case they were tribes.
    Sure, we would see/hear about the occasional child bride to a 50something old man for a few goats, several bushels of wheat and a tin pot.
    Some were more extreme in their religion but name me a religion where that does not exist.

    This is to hide collapse longer, only some undeserving are getting cut. Nothing to do with migrants, nothing to do with lieing unemployment if you are not on list because you have been looking for over a year magically you don’t count. Nothing to do with hb1 visas cause no way Americans want that job. No way it’s to cut wages further so we can compete against cjinese at $3 a day in wages.

    But we in congress need more as can’t make ends meet at $ 170,000 a year.
